Scottsdale school administrators begin homework on next year’s enrollment projections and building needs after a two part bond issue for 13 million dollars failed 2000 to 2209. Superintendent John Turner says the district must prepare financial and facility plans for September.
A Miami widow, Mrs. James F. Morrow, accepted the Purple Heart at Sentisdale City Hall for Sgt. James F. Morrow of the First Airborne Division fatally wounded near Chu Lat on the DMZ. Col. Osbone presented the award as local officials and family recalled his service and bravery.
NY police clear hundreds of anti draft demonstrators to protect President Johnson and Vice President Humphrey attending Cardinal Spallman’s funeral. In Cincinnati, about 60 students are arrested for trespass and disorderly conduct during a Sit-in at the Selective Service center with 40 days for contempt of court for two inmates. In Saigon Bon Son reports say U S cavalry killed 146 Communists as fighting continues. Meany calls AFL CIO stance on Vietnam neither hawk nor dove and criticizes Walter Reuther.
A Phoenix fire caused about 100000 dollars in damage at the 9 North Phoenix shopping center and is suspected to be the work of a burglar. The blaze began in MecCrary's Pharmacy main office at Erie Plaza Shopping Center near Central and Cameback early today. Police and FBI also reported arrests in a Tempe bank robbery case and a suspect driving a stolen car. James David Woodward was taken into custody after being found in a stolen vehicle and identified as the Tempe bank robber who stole 1170 dollars from the Mesa branch at Apache Boulevard.
The Arizona Senate narrowly approves a tax assessment plan and an education bill amid party splits. The tax package would classify property into three brackets, with homes and farms at 18 percent, utilities 1 percent, and mines 100 percent, a plan opposed by several Republicans. The education bill limits year-to-year spending increases to six percent and advances to conference with House leadership pledging quick action.
Five new members were elected to the Scolisdala Chamber of Commerce board for three year terms starting Jan. 1. New directors are Bil Ritter Ed O Neil Charles Ronan Mackelstrap and John Harper Jr. An exceptionally large vote noted by Chamber President U H Welch will lead to an executive meeting to select officers for 1000. The group will be installed Jan 26 at the Camelback Inn.
House Senate negotiators approve a 13 percent across the board increase for about 23.8 million Social Security recipients. The minimum monthly payment rises from 44 to 55 dollars, with larger benefits starting in February and first checks in March. Payroll tax base climbs to 7,800 dollars from January 1, and the tax rate increases to 4.4 percent next year becoming 4.8 percent in 1940.
President Johnson and Vice President Humphrey attended Cardinal Spellman's funeral at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York with six American and three foreign cardinals. The service included a Pontifical Mass and a large ecumenical procession, followed by burial in the cathedral crypt. Police faced traffic disruptions from anti draft protests as Johnson traveled from Washington for the rites amid rain and security measures.
Larry Bell, Scottsdale teacher and Arizona Consumers Council president, called for an inquiry into the reappraisal program and urged lawmakers to adjourn without enacting tax laws. He criticized the $644 million figures as a monster and proposed alternatives including income tax shifts and mine taxes, plus a land plan to curb speculation and removal of food and rental taxes. UPI reports a 10 000 ton airlift from Fort Campbell to Vietnam speeds deployment of the 15 000 man War Airborne Division. One brigade has been in Vietnam since July, with 978 flights and about 22 000 flying hours. estimated cost 17.5 million dollars. Westmoreland sought rapid return of troops as soon as possible.
