U S troops trapped a North Vietnamese unit, about 475 miles northeast of Saigon, driving the Communists into air support range after heavy fighting that left 69 dead according to field reports.
Sixty servicemen from all branches arrive in Phoenix for a week long rest before reassignment. A 4 dinner at Camelback Inn Thursday honors the veterans as they rotate back to the United States for active duty.
Ellis Tacke Contracting Co. bid $138,570 for Scottsdale’s first city owned fire station at Miller and Thomas Rds. Other bids ranged from $144,602 to $164,000. Final approval rests with Scottsdale Municipal Property Corp and the City Council on Dec. 18. The 8,400 square foot station will be leased to the city until paid off, then owned by the city, as Rural Fire Dept services are phased out over three years. The city plans to build more stations and hire city firefighters. Equipment is being bought from Rural Fire to outfit the stations during the transition.
The Weather Bureau at Sky Harbor Airport warns a Canadian cold front will push temperatures well below freezing tonight in the Valley. Lows are forecast 25 to 27 degrees with the coldest hours between 2 and 4 a.m. Sunday, while today stays fair but windy and cool with a high near 65.
Air Force Maj. Robert H. Lawrence Jr., the nation’s first Negro chosen for astronaut training, was killed when his jet crashed during a routine training flight at Edwards AFB. Maj. Harvey Royer was injured. Lawrence left a widow Barbara Cressmanch and son Tracey. Lawrence, 31, had been selected for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory program and held 2,500 flight hours. He grew up in Chicago and earned a PhD in chemistry from Ohio State University.
The Federal Trade Commission targets racial discrimination in apartment advertising with new enforcement power. The initial action cites nine operators whose ads claimed openness to all while denying Negroes, signaling possible nationwide impact beyond Arlington Virginia where the complaint was first filed.
Lynda Johnson 23 wed Capt. Charles Robb 20 in an East Room ceremony attended by 500 guests. The Episcopal service featured Canon Gerald McAllister and Mendelssohn’s Wedding March as the White House hosted a champagne reception and dance afterward.
Two legislative conference committees in Phoenix work toward compromise on tax reform and education bills. About 600 delegates and 220 local affiliate presidents attended an emergency Arizona Education Association session in Phoenix to discuss proposed school financing controls. Dr. Dell Chamberlain of Mesa warned the legislation threatens education, with teachers angered at being singled out for rising taxes and costs. He said the measures could hamper operations, cap salaries, drive good teachers away, and force program cuts.
Thunderbird Academy of the Seventh Day Adventists plans to remain at its Scottsdale area campus near Scottedale Airport as enrollment grows. Board decisions keep the single Arizona site, with 810 students now and about 50 potential attendees hampered by distance, while land sale plans were halted.
