Women Pioneers Shaped U S Journalism and Politics
A look at the long history of women in the United States across journalism, politics, and sports. From Anne Franklin editor of the Newport Mercury in 1762 to Emily Edson Briggs the first White House correspondent in 1866 and Nellie Bly's exposés, pioneers forged paths for suffrage leaders like Stanton and Anthony and for later trailblazers such as Rankin and Caraway. Sports icons include Babe Didrikson Zaharias, with early women’s teams like the Young Ladies Baseball Club No 1 touring in 1890.
