Consumer prices rose half a percent in July led by gasoline medical care and dairy products. Yearly inflation sits 5.4 percent above last year with after tax earnings rising slightly after inflation. Gasoline rose 1.5 percent pushing the national price of unleaded regular to 62.3 cents a gallon. Arizona State University is mentioned amid a month of student registration.
Former dairy lobbyist Jake Jacobsen was sentenced to two years probation by U.S. District Judge George L. Hart for his role in the Nixon era milk scandal. The judge said Jacobsen richly deserved jail but must care for his ailing wife who could die if imprisoned.
Vietnam submitted its application for UN membership, the move announced by Ambassador Dinh Ba Thi as Vietnam is now unified after decades of conflict. The U.S. mission declined to comment, recalling Washington vetoes on North and South Vietnam a year earlier over South Korea’s exclusion.
Tropical storm Dottie turned toward the Atlantic seaboard with a hurricane watch posted for coastal areas from Jacksonville Florida to Cape Hatteras North Carolina. A committee in the Scottsdale School District will meet next week at the district education center to develop plans for a new middle school in Arcadia area. Tom Smith, Hohokam principal, leads the study with five school reps and two district officials. The panel aims to finalize a report by December for board action.
Phoenix City Council requested a federal grant of 9 900 for mass transit improvements in Scottsdale. The funds would install three bus stop shelters ten benches and one hundred forty signs along routes in the five city regional system. Phoenix seeks over 3 million in federal grants including Scottsdale’s share with 1.5 million for capital 1.7 million for operations and Scottsdale to contribute about 2 500 for installation per Leo J Moore the public information spokesman.
Arizona state superintendent Carolyn Warner announced the U S Office of Education accepted a new method for calculating federal education costs. The change yields 138 dollars more per Chinle student and about 500000 dollars extra for the district this year. She criticized prior federal funding promises to Navajo children and noted heavy local taxes and threatened school closures.
