An armed gang of 20 to 30 masked bandits raided an unguarded Glasgow to London mail train in Cheddington England stealing about 3 million dollars in cash and gems. They took 120 mail sacks before disappearing and police found no trace of the robbers in the countryside north of London.
Ex dictator Gustavo Rojas Pinilla was arrested on conspiracy charges and flown to a southern military base near the Ecuador border for questioning. Police said he planned to topple President Guillermo Valencia's government with a plot set to launch before dawn. Valencia is abroad meeting Venezuelan President Betancourt.
Maricopa County assigns trial lawyer Joseph P. Shaw to probe alleged kickbacks in printing contracts. County Atty. Charles Rowan, Atty. Gen. Robert Pickrell and deputies will cooperate. Civil suit by Donald and Mrs. Seymour accuses James V. Tinney of Par-Press, Inc. involvement.
Three Scottsdale property owners E. E. Brown Kemper Marley and James P. Paul filed a Maricopa County suit in Superior Court to block Don Pablo's proposed 65000 seat amphitheater north of town. They allege zoning changes were improper and seek an injunction to stop building permits. Earthmoving has begun near Scottsdale Road and Pinnacle Peak Road by Don Pablo's Western museum.
Dr Ernst Stoeter a 56 year old West German physician crawled 90 yards into a border minefield to reach a 26 year old fugitive wounded by a mine. The man had fled into East Germany with his wife and child to avoid a year in prison for a morals charge. The doctor treated him at the border and returned him to safety after the mine blast.
A Congress ordered study finds self regulatory groups failing to protect investors from fraud and manipulation. The report calls for tighter regulatory machinery, extended credit margin requirements, and stricter policing of mutual fund operations.
Alabama coach Paul Bear Bryant testified in a $10 million suit against the Saturday Evening Post. He said he absolutely did not receive any information that helped Alabama defeat Georgia 85 to 0 last year.

Justice of the Peace Harold Holcomb reviews a Scottsdale man’s claim that two court reporters overcharged him $75 in October 1960. Judge Holcomb studies jurisdiction as the complaint is under advisement.
The city board tabled a $2 million hotel use permit for Continental at 68th Street and Camelback Road, delaying construction of a 156 room two story hotel with a cocktail lounge and restaurant on a five acre parcel. The board also approved four variances and denied two other applications including a nursery school at 7921 E Willetta and outdoor sale of mountain cabins by Advance Mobile Homes.
18 year old Charles E. Dixon of Phoenix is jailed without bond after falling asleep at the wheel and ramming a Scottsdale police vehicle at 1 26 a m at 84th Street and McDowell Road. Patrolman Carl H Rahn 40 said the squad car was knocked 200 feet and about 1500 damage occurred. Dixon received hospital treatment and will be arraigned before City Judge Fenton McDonough later today.
The Arizona Tax Commission meets Friday to set a new state property tax rate likely to be about 20 cents lower than the current $1.80 per $100 valuation. State officials cite a $19.3 million surplus and a $100 million rise in total assessed valuation as possible reasons for further cuts.
