Rail unions and railroads reach August 1971 contract ending strike
The United Transportation Union and railroads reached a general 90 day framework to end an 18 day strike by 180000 workers on 10 lines. They agreed to longer runs with no extra pay and arbitration on unresolved issues. UTU president Charles Luna praised the deal as proof collective bargaining works.

In Imperial Beach on Sunday night police faced rock and bottle throwing by 200 to 300 teens and hippies. Forty officers used tear gas to disperse the roving groups as two officers were seriously hurt and 21 people were arrested.

U S Steel Announces Broad Price Increases
U S Steel Corp said it will raise prices across its carbon and alloy steel lines by about 8 percent to offset rising costs under a new wage contract with the United Steelworkers Union. Increases take effect August 5 for semi finished and related products, and October 1 for tin mill and related items, with higher hikes on certain items such as axles and alloy tubing.

French actor Michel St Denis dies in London at 73
Michel J. St. Denis the French born actor author and theater producer died Saturday at his London home aged 73. He served as BBC morale booster during World War II and later was consultant director at the Royal Shakespeare Company. He founded the Compagnie des Quinze and the London Theater Studio with notable colleagues including John Gielgud Michael Redgrave Peggy Ashcroft Tyrone Guthrie and helped develop the Old Vic Theater School.

Culprit thwarted at a price in Windsor incident
