Sixteen Coronado youths completed the Youth Leadership Course sponsored by Papago Toastmasters. Recipients include Karen Bittinger Carrie Kennington Donna Kevan Corky McNealy Sandie Patterson Emily Payne Kathy Pratt Shawn Sharp Dean Smith Ruth Smith Jane Saloman Marcus Thompson Andy Welch Tim Wherley Tom Wherley and Rob Young. Ed Kirdar club president says Toastmasters International developed the program. Dave Groves coordinated the class.
Israeli defense sources in Tel Aviv warn of a tougher response to regain initiative after Egyptian raids along the Suez Canal. Egypt says it rejects the 1967 cease fire, while Lebanon sees fighting between police and Palestinian refugees amid border raids. UN observers report Egyptian shelling near canal posts and an ambulance marked with a red cross. Senior Israeli officials doubt a full war is likely but accuse Egypt of trying to provoke one through raids and heavy shelling.
President Nixon asked Congress to raise first class letters to seven cents and post cards to six, with second and third class mail higher as stage one of a plan to cut the 1970 postal deficit by more than 600 million. He warned refusal would burden taxpayers and pledged reforms in the postal system within 45 days.
The United States mounted its largest wartime bomber force, unleashing at least two million pounds of bombs from eight engine B52s on North Vietnamese troops near the Cambodian border. Casualties rose as air and ground operations continued in War Zone C, with 216 Americans killed and 1,602 wounded last week.
Ida Wellington 59 found dead of natural causes Monday on canal road near 2nd Street Tempe. Funeral at Universal Memorial Center 10 a.m. Friday with burial in Goodyear Cemetery. Survivors include seven children Arnold Arthur Regina Conger Randall Arthur Gene Arthur and Larry Arthur of Scottsdale Marie York of Tucson Leonard Ryeston of Bapchule and sister Margaret Wellington of Goodyear.
Five Arizona State University students denied appeals after a campus demonstration during a speech by Gov. Jack Williams. Dean of Students George Hamm retained sanctions and appointed a committee to review conduct hearing procedures, led by Dr. William Phillips. The students were Chad Smith, 21. Richard Dillon, 23. Harvey Bryan, 20. Kim Moody, 24. and Dayne Coffey, 21.
The GAO report notes Mari copa County's 1 million job training program requires improvement. It cites 80 impoverished individuals who gained experience training, left welfare, and saved 105000 in public aid for families with dependent children, stating federal spending served a useful purpose under the Economic Opportunity Act.
