The Hazelwood steamed through heavy seas to the Thresher tragedy in the North Atlantic. Weather hampered search efforts as crews battled the elements while seeking the submarine's grave site after Thresher sank in 1.5 miles of water with 129 lives lost. The ship reached the area at 6 45 a.m. PST.
President Kennedy ordered flags at half staff from all government buildings until sunset Monday to honor the 129 men who died aboard the submarine Thresher. The executive order, issued by the former naval officer, calls for a nationwide gesture of respect for those who gave their lives.
After the loss of the Thresher with 129 aboard, the Navy formed a board led by Vice Admiral Bernard L. Austin to determine the cause. Rescue efforts in rough seas continue as scientists plan buoy mapping to locate the wreck about 275 miles east of Boston, with little chance of survivors.
The Navy planned to use the bathy scaphe Trieste in the Thresher disaster search if the submarine is found. It will carry one movie camera and three still cameras along with radiation measuring gear to aid investigations. Santa Fe Railroad arranged an open track to move the 50 ton craft as time pressure grows.
Allied Supreme Headquarters reports two of three American Polaris submarines stationed in the Mediterranean. USS Sam Houston will make a courtesy call Sunday at Izmir, Turkey.

The Arizona Legislature approved the Salt River Project bill with a 69 to 4 House vote after Senate approval 20 to 7. The bill lets SRP make annual payments to the state in lieu of direct taxation with portions shared by counties cities and school districts. Governor Fannin called the process a landmark and hinted at no immediate need for a special session.
Preliminary hearing for Iranian twin brothers Nasser and Mansour Haghighi, both 26, charged with second degree burglary for allegedly burglarizing the David Griffin home in Paradise Valley on Nov 8. 1962. They also face kidnapping charges involving a 3 year old Phoenix boy. Hearing set for 1 30 p.m. Wednesday in Scottsdale Justice Court.
The Bandung Jakarta express derailed near Tagekapu in a 250 foot ravine killing at least 28 people including the engineer and injuring 35 others. Antara reported more deaths feared as darkness hindered rescue efforts.

A homemade fire bomb exploded through a window at Aaron Henry's home in Clarksdale injuring no one. Charles C. Diggs, visiting on a civil rights probe, helped fight the blaze with Henry. Police investigated with aid from the fire marshal as Diggs planned to meet officials in Washington.
Integration leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. plans a prayer march on city hall in defiance of a Circuit Court injunction. An aide said kneel-ins are planned for Easter Sunday and King vowed to march despite the order as protests continue in Birmingham. About 50 volunteers joined the Good Friday march and 20 Negroes picketed downtown stores, raising the total jailed to 163 in nine days of demonstrations.
City court complaints filed Thursday accuse Harry Pappas of Apache Liquors and Ray Shroyer of the Beeline Lounge of failing to pay Scottsdale's one percent sales tax. Prosecutor Osmond Burton said both are three months delinquent. the city has authority to close delinquent businesses.
Coroner's juror P K Taylor of Scottsdale states airman S C Erick s 21 of Levering Michigan did not walk to his death. Inquest in Scottsdale Justice Court finds Erick's body in the Arizona Canal near the Beeline bridge with drowning ruled between March 29 and April 7. Autopsy notes body possibly in canal 24 to 72 hours. bruising undetermined.
Scottsdale Jaycees organize the annual Easter egg hunt at Scottsdale High School grounds tomorrow morning. Chairman Ed Marsam says 7,200 colored eggs will be hidden before the 9 a.m. start. Smitty's Big Town contributes 3,600 eggs and prizes with eggs stamped by the store redeemable for prizes. Main prizes are two bicycles. additional rewards include rabbits and Easter baskets for top egg collectors.
The U S Court of Appeals refused to restore citizenship to Edward Sittler who served as a broadcaster for Adolf Hitler in World War II. It held he failed to renounce and repudiate his Nazi association. Sittler, born in Ohio, moved to Germany in 1937 and became naturalized there.
Michael Geary an 11 year old sixth grader from Supai School will represent the Scottsdale School District in the State Spelling Bee at Hotel Westward Ho with his district winning word arrogant. He earned the honor after winning the district contest March 23 and is accompanied by his mother Helen Geary and Principal George Sessions. The state contest begins at 1 15 pm and offers a prize trip to Washington DC for the national bee.
Law enforcement press to locate more stolen alligators from a Salt River Valley farm. Seventeen reptiles found in canals and at youths' homes with more possibly released in Salt River lakes. Arizona Humane Society fed 350 pounds of horse meat to the over 200 gators as ownership questions linger. Farm operator Dale Logston of Fort Worth leased by Jack Adams. Logston abandoned the farm six weeks prior. Deputies questioned several youths about taking small alligators and releasing them.
