Four scientists were moved to the Atlantis II to map the North Atlantic floor for the Thresher, with a signpost buoy to mark its dive site. The Hazelwood will deploy a 1,200 pound anchor and work alongside three destroyers to search about 1,000 yards apart as depth soundings are used.

Cmdr Deane L Axene testified before a Navy court of inquiry that the ill fated submarine Thresher showed trouble during its first deep dive soon after commissioning in August 1961. He recalled the dive occurring near the Atlantic site where the Thresher sank with 129 men. The Thresher had undergone overhaul at Portsmouth prior to the voyage.

Two Youths Held In Firebombing in Clarksdale
In Clarksdale Mississippi two white youths Theodore Carr and Luther Cauthen both of Clarksdale were arrested on arson charges after Molotov cocktails were thrown at the home of Aaron Henry NAACP president during a visit by Congressman Charles C Diggs. The quick investigation wrapped up within 12 hours. Chief Ben C Collins reported they were “lucky” to make the arrests. Carr is 24 and a Northwest Mississippi Junior College student. Cauthen is 26 and a local TV repairman.
