Scarsdale 1956 Graduation Speakers and Program details

Scarsdale High School will graduate 200 seniors on Friday June 22 in the school auditorium. Farris A. Flint publisher of Walworth Ave. will speak after an address by Rev. Edwin H. Lehr. Archibald B. Shaw will present diplomas as Mendelssohn and Ward selections recall the ceremony.

Promoter Ford Named Assistant VP at Scarsdale Bank

Harry J. Ford of White Rd was named assistant vice-president of Scarsdale National Bank and Trust Co last week. He will head the new Palmer Ave Heathcote branch opening likely late July or August. Ford joined as office boy in 1929 and rose to assistant cashier in 1941. He has led the Note Dept and taught at the American Institute of Banking School in White Plains since 1946. He previously led Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce, scouted with Troop 1, chaired Troop 5 fathers, and now serves as vice-chairman of the Cohawney District of the Washington Irving Boy Scout Council.

Summer Schedule At Public Library Scarsdale

Beginning June 30 and through Sept 1 the Scarsdale Public Library closes at one on Saturdays. Regular hours remain 1 to 9 Monday and Wednesday and 10 to 6 Tuesday Thursday Friday. Vacation Loan allows up to 8 books kept until Oct 1 with requests made at checkout.

Honorary Degree Granted to Alden C Smith at Simpson College

Alden C Smith a partner at Price Waterhouse Co NYC received Simpson College Indianola IA honorary doctor of laws during the 89th commencement on June 3. A 1924 Simpson graduate he holds an MBA from Harvard. He was elected alumni trustee for a three year term at the alumni luncheon and attended his first trustee meeting on campus.

Yearend School Festival Showcases Grade Dances and Color Guard

A committee of third through sixth graders led a yearend festival with gym and music work. John Strohmeier announced, Thomas Whipple, Robert Roskind, and Ronald Cummings acted as color guard as the audience joined in America. Classes performed dances to piano by Mrs. Trowbridge, with kindergarten to sixth grade pieces ending in an American folk dance and Pop Goes the Weasel.

Teachers Honor Mrs. Irene Fike On Retirement

Greenacres School and nearby faculties gathered for a retirement party for Mrs. Irene Fike. Colleagues from Fox Meadow Heathcote and Edgewood joined emcee Burd Stover as guests enjoyed skits from "Nursky" Lily Holmes and "Professor Harevold" Harold Weinstein. A toy TV set was given as a keepsake to mark her years of service.

Scholastic Awards Presented at Scarsdale High School

At the Scarsdale High School Scholastic Awards Assembly on June 6, 39 students received honors. Principal Oliver W. Melchior presided as awards covered Citizenship, science, language, and college prizes. Recipients included Andrew Schaffer and Margery Smoley for American Legion Citizenship, Lee McClelland and Jay Monge for D A R, Charles Maier for science medals, Patricia Greene for National French contest, Robert Wood for Williams College Alumni Book Award, and Robert Craft and Linda Craft for Harvard Club Book Awards.

Altieri Elected Legion Commander

Gene J. Altieri of Colchester Hall was elected commander of Scarsdale American Legion Post 52 at the annual meeting on Mamaroneck Road. Elected with him were vice captains, delegates, and officers including Richard Linbacher Vernis Shuttleworth James Crist George Leveille Albert Woehrle Lawrence Willows and others. Medals and plaques were awarded to local students and Boys State delegates were named for the fall program.

Memorial Day Girl Scout Troop Winners at Butler Field

In the hurly burly of Memorial Day events at Butler Field the paper corrects wrong numbers for the intermediate division awards. Troops 67 and 66 tied for first prize. Troop 70 took second. Troops 60 and 71 shared third. Congratulations to the belated winners.

District Board Reviews State Auditor Report for School District

Helge Johnson, president, states the State auditors for Scarsdale School District No. 1 covered July 1 1953 to June 30 1955 with 20 recommendations five new. Most concerns are procedural and about statutory interpretation with no fund diversion alleged. The board will study the report and act at the July meeting.

Ron Picket Claims State Scholastic Tennis Title

Ron Picket of Griffen Ave a Scarsdale High School student won the State Scholastic Tennis Championship in Garden City last Saturday defeating Bob Gilmore of Ocean City 6-2 6-3. He was last year’s Section One champion after beating Ed Loebert Nyack 9-7 6-4 and Bob Dugan Buffalo 8-6 7-5 in the semifinals.

Legion Post Demands Suspension of Committee

A Scarsdale American Legion Post 52 meeting on June 6 voted 60 to 6 to suspend the Westchester Legion Un-American Activities Committee. It urged impounding all records funds and files while a county wide investigation is conducted by delegates from each post with invitations to the New York Department the National Legion and the State Attorney General's Office.
