Archibald B. Shaw, superintendent of schools in District One, earned a Ph.D. from New York University's School of Education on June 6. His thesis was "A New Look at Secondary Education." Shaw joined Scarsdale as assistant superintendent in 1946 and became superintendent in September 1949.

The 12th annual John Parker Compton Tennis Tournament drew 79 players from 27 schools, the highest tally in history. Westchester youths under 18 begin Monday at Fox Meadow Club with Paul Sullivan in charge, tournament director Joseph Davidson aided by James Arles. Silver bowls will honor singles and doubles winners, with names engraved on the Compton Memorial Bowl.
