Annual School Picnic Marks End of 1938 39 Year in Scandia

Friday May 19 brought the school year to a close with a noon dinner for 300 in the schoolhouse auditorium and an afternoon of track contests for all grades. Events included grade specific dashes sack races potato races and a 25 50 and 30 yard dash for different groups. A softball game pitted north side merchants against south side with an 18 to 5 win for the north side. Senior initiation on Main Street closed the day as alumni sponsored a parade of nursery rhyme characters through town.

First Band Concert Opens Scandia Season On Wheels

The Scandia Community Club staged its first band concert of the season led by Fred Reasoner. A movable on wheels band stand was built by C. E. Albro and Chris Nelson and positioned near the post office with lights for evening performances. The club plans more summer concerts around town to cover expenses, seeking about 50 to fund operations. a mystery comedy “Behind Locked Doors” directed by E. C. Wires featuring Ada Jeandebeur Norma Aspegren Johnny Nystrom Jimmy Larsen Bobby Ewing Ercell Lundblade Vernon Holmes and W. H. Berger will be staged in early June.

Vacation Bible School Opens in Scandia May 29

On Monday May 29 at 8 30 am the United Brethren Presbyterian and Methodist churches will start a two week Daily Vacation Bible School for Scandia area children. Dr Everett will be general superintendent with volunteer teachers from the three denominations. Sessions run 8 30 to 11 30 daily with a mid session recess, no school Saturdays, term ends June 9. Parents urged to note this community effort and support pupils both boys and girls.

Mayor E. T. Olson proclaims May 30 1939 as Memorial Day in Scandia Kansas to honor the dead and patriotic heroes. Businesses close 12 to 5 pm for commemorations at the high school auditorium and Riverview Cemetery.

Road Work on U. S. 36 to Start Soon

Announcement that construction on U S Highway 36 will begin soon across Republic county and neighboring counties Washington and Marshall. Band notes announce ongoing beginner and general rehearsals

Beginners class began May 23 and runs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 p.m. in the school music room. General band rehearsals occur Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. A Saturday street concert starts at 8 p.m. The note invites all old timers to join and projects a 60 to 75 piece Scandia band for the fall games.

Picnic committees chosen for Scandia event

The Scandia Community Club held its monthly banquet and meeting at the Masonic Temple with about twenty businessmen present. President Harry Hampton led the session which set plans for the annual Picnic in the first week of August and discussed Highway No.36. Committees for the event were appointed, naming E. C. Wires as President and a broad slate for General, Entertainment, Finance, Advertising, Dance, Decorating, Music, Traffic, Ionic Date, and Baseball roles.
