Plans are under way for the final activities of the term at the Grade School. Commencement for 23 seniors is set for Thursday May 18 at City Hall with the Concordia U B church pastor Rev Holt delivering the address. Picnic and Alumni Banquet finalize the week.
A 1933 notice announces a public meeting in Scandia City Hall on Friday evening May 12 to discuss the Kansas Power Company electric franchise petition. Citizens are urged to attend to express views in an open forum.
Last Thursday night a general rain moistens western Kansas with Scandia recording just under an inch. The week features chilly skies, sun breaks, and a Tuesday night shower, plus a strong Sherdahl wind causing damage. May weather notes mention capper-cutting trends.

Weather improves soil conditions as farmers plan to start planting corn this week. Some say ground remains cold in spots but recent rains favor sowing and expect better yields from later plantings, with traditional dates shifting from April 20 to around May 10.
Kansas Facts the state year book will be published in Wichita by the Wichita Eagle. Hershel Kannier has prepared copy since January. The volume contains agriculture education government resources history and organizations with a roster of officials and county election results. It includes supreme court decisions and a 10 year historical sketch from statehood to 1890 and city population statistics.
Courtland defeats Scandia 6 to 1 as Juddy Freed pitches a strong game for Courtland while Scandia challenges with several errors. Logsdon and Freed combine for most of the strikeouts as Wayne hosts next Sunday with Wayne aggregations to meet on the local field.
The new city council organized for the coming two year term appointing night marshal and city officers. John D. Larsen was the first appointee as marshal, Raymond Cooper named city clerk, and B M Ivey as treasurer. committees were assigned for claims licenses streets parks etc with Jake P Stofer Jr tasked to audit the city books.
A brief note indicates the subject of the Lesson Sermon in Christian Science titled Adam and Fallen Man continues on page five. It signals continued discussion of creed and human nature.
Jeanne Plotner captured the girls singles title at the Republic County Tennis meet in Republic on May 6. Norway won the boys singles and the girls doubles. Republic took the boys doubles, with Norway also placing first in the girls doubles. Scandia was represented by Everette Watson in the boys singles.
Charles Glover worked near an oven in Chilcott bakery last week when fumes caused dizziness. He tried to reach the door but fainted on the floor as the fumes grew stronger. Fresh air under the door revived him after about an hour and he escaped.
The junior senior banquet, a highlight in local academic circles, was held Friday evening at the Lutheran Church. Faculty and school board members attended as guests while the seniors were honored. Mothers of the juniors prepared a banquet menu and the marine themed program titled Bon Voyage featured acts by Albert English Jeannette Ahrens Marvin Wirrell Edwin White and Nona Finn Mahan with Superintendent Stukenbroeker.
Leonard Barton of Wayne suffered serious injuries last week when a six-horse hitched to a disc bolted during a move between fields. The horses bucked, one leg was caught in the blades, and the man’s ankle was severely cut. One horse was killed and others injured. Barton, 18, was taken to Concordia Hospital for treatment.
Report describes an assault on Judge C C Bradley in Le Mars during a confrontation over farm mortgage foreclosures. Farmers and mobs disrupted the court, with bystanders smoking and hats kept on, as the judge resisted threats and ordered calm while the fracas continued.
County districts received state financial statement forms required to be posted in three places within the district. Forms prepared by the state tax commission must be posted ten days after district meetings. The district meeting under the new law is set for 2 p.m. on the last Friday in May to determine levy votes.
The school presents The Clay’s the Thing in three acts at 8 PM with cast Carl Forsberg Everett Watson Marvin Florell Phil Cahill Adam Samuelson Kathryn Doctor Vivian Stukenbroek Phil Smith Bernice Bowersox Jeannette Ahrens Lorraine Jackson. Coached by Miss Helen Curry with Mr Stukenbroeker as business and stage manager and Maye Roberts as student director. Specialities feature under the direction of Miss Frances Guthrie.
Professor F L Miller will direct Scandia schools next year and serves as the commencement speaker at Morrowville on Wednesday May 7. He is described as well educated in both in schools and in the common sense of daily life.
