Seventy six students named on the honor roll for the first six weeks of the second semester at Scandia High. Seniors lead with nine on honorable mention and two on the roll, juniors three, sophomores one, freshmen none, and one post graduate on the roll.
At the Belleville Citizens caucus nine candidates were chosen for offices. A T Huntington heads the city commissioner slate. Board of Education nominees are Dr W R Barnard Cal Calkins and Levi Miller. Constables Bertert Weaver and W E Jones. Justice of the Peace Chas Larsen and Thomas Doctor. Treasurer of the Board D Dr Bramwell Jr. Ticket named Citizens ticket and to be the sole slate on April 4 election day.
The Kansas state dental association of Topeka sponsors a health poster contest split into school and general public divisions. General public prizes are money awards while schools receive roving cups and banners. Posters must address health subjects and rules are available by writing the association.
Snow and cold grip the plains as a misty rain turned to snow last Saturday night. Ground covered in thick carpet of snow on Sunday with strong winds. Early week skies cleared but Wednesday brought more snow. Nebraska and parts of Kansas struggle to dig out from deep drifts.
Amana Lutheran Church invites Sunday School and services in the morning and evening with a choir practice tonight. Dorcas Society hosts at the church parlors Friday afternoon. Methodist Church announces Epworth League rally this Thursday at Concordia, religious instruction Saturday at the parsonage, and Lord's Day services at 10 a.m. and evening program. Victorious Life Week begins Monday with Rev H E Weavers preaching each evening. Everyone welcome.
Presbyterian United Brethren Church outlines a 10 o'clock Sunday School start. Junior C. E. meets at 8 30 with Antoanette Wetzel leading. Senior C. E. gathers at 7 15 at the church.
The Norway Kansas church, led by Pastor T Orlin Torgeson, lists Sunday School and Bible classes at 10 am, morning worship at 11 am in Swedish, and evening services at 7:30 pm. Midweek Lent services with music run Wednesdays toward Good Friday, with various leaders and topics announced for April and March events.
The Vernon Lee players composed of local talent will stage a play at City Hall next Saturday evening titled The House of Terror. Admission is ten cents.
A meeting of directors and managers with M C Hilery outlines plans for a new Republic County Baseball League. Six teams from Courtland Republic Belleville Scandia Wayne andAgenda have entered with invitations to Narka and Haddam. An eight team schedule could run sixteen games starting May first if accepted. Local improvements include field upgrades and seating. Emory Mel Irvin leads the local team with Glen Currie as captain.
Beginning next Monday evening evangelistic meetings will be held at the local Methodist Church. Rev. H. E. Weaver of West Hill New York will preach nightly at 8 oclock with afternoon sessions and special music. The local church has conducted religious emphasis weeks for years and invites all to attend.
Republic County teachers and school board members gathered at Belleville High School for a combined meeting. Dr E E Stonecipher of Pittsburg State Teachers College gave an informative address while the annual Republic County School Board Association meeting discussed salary reductions with no decision reached. New officers were elected: G W Gates president A H James vice president Noble Isaacson secretary treasurer. The executive committee includes the county superintendent and several district leaders.
Mr. J. D. Matchett of Concordia is named by the Missouri Railroad to temporarily replace E. W. Crandall at Scandia while Crandall undergoes cataract surgery at Security Benefit Association Hospital in Topeka. Crandall plans a month’s absence and will visit relatives and friends in Corning during recovery.
Relatives report Howard Vincent son of Mr and Mrs Barto Vincent of Scandia killed himself last Tuesday in Oak Park Illinois. He had recently suffered a severe influenza illness followed by a nervous breakdown. Vincent left for Chicago and the remains are expected to be shipped to Scandia for burial.
J A Patterson and H C Philbrick were arrested on a Grandmas Breakfast Foods truck bound from this county to Omaha. A federal court upheld Judge Hopkins’ sentence imposing 10000 fine and five years in prison for each man. Philbrick injured in a recent car crash has not yet begun serving his term. Patterson surrendered in Topeka for commitment.
A citizens caucus at City Hall nominated Mayor Bakeley and multiple council and police judge contenders. Ed Olson and Chas Freed led council votes, Ellingson topped the police judge race, with plans to circulate petitions for another independent ticket increasing electoral competition and voter choice.
As cash dried up during the bank holiday Cuba residents flocked to the fields with spades. Tourists saw long lines of workers who weren’t gardening but digging for gold. After the work, trade returned to its old style bills as currency.
President Roosevelt pushes rapid action on beer policy pensions and salaries, seeks swift farm aid measures to boost farmer purchasing power and ease debt pressure. He urges Congress to race ahead with bank and budget reforms while signaling new, untested methods to rescue prices and stimulate economic recovery. The nation largely backs his push if results follow.
Today in Concordia a Methodist bishop from the Kansas City area will visit. He attends a breakfast with city officials and church representatives and will address Chamber of Commerce Rotary and Kiwanis groups at noon. An afternoon 3:30 mass meeting at the Methodist Church precedes an informal reception by the Young People's Council and invites Epworth Leagues to send delegations.
A horse was stolen from Mrs. Frank Wells near Wayne in old frontier days recalled by locals. The horse was later recovered but the thief and saddle remain missing.
