The Kansas legislature closes its session amid economy gains and new laws. An income tax raises about two million dollars while personal exemptions and charity deductions ease tax burdens. County officers face pay cuts and salaries. Governor Landon signs seventy measures including the tax and salary laws.
Richard Othberg son of Mr and Mrs Chas Othberg of Scandia has been honored by an election to the position of Vice President of the Manhattan Chapter of the national fraternity Delta Sigma Phi. He is a sophomore at KS.
A Sunday evening fire burned a home as family car and all livestock were rescued. A large crowd gathered on scene to witness efforts and assist where possible.
Rev B W Selin of Scandia Methodist Church was invited to preach the baccalaureate for Courtland High School. The service will be held at Courtland City Hall on Sunday evening May 14.
Local United Brethren Presbyterian Church officials met last Tuesday evening to consider a pastor application. No definite decision was reached regarding engaging a minister. They decided to confer with Christian Endeavor officers on the matter.
Lawrence Nystrom found a 14 inch petrified object at the San-Ore gravel pit on the Edlund farm. Archeologists study and cannot reach a definite conclusion. At first it looks like a tongue but shows teeth and possibly horns. It may be an early crustacean.
Fifth Sunday in Lent with a Swedish language morning service and English evening service planned. Dorcas Society meets Friday afternoon in church parlors, hosted by Mesdames Carl Hammer and Alger Anderson. Pastor Chashrson leads.
The Victorious Life series continues Friday and Sunday with cottage meetings at the Boline and John Fredrickson homes. Church School at 10 a.m. worship at 11 with special music. Epworth League meets at 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. closing meeting. Rev H E Weaver from Genoa Neb preaching. newly elected officers to be installed. Community invited.
The Presbyterian United Brethren church announces Sunday School at 10 AM with a special program by Miss Francis Guthrie's class. Junior C E meets 3:30 PM and Senior C E plans a Trip Around the World if weather allows, leaving from Charles Freed's home at 7:15 PM. Weekly midweek Lenten services and various meetings are listed with dates and hosts.
Emporia Teachers College capped its eight sport intramural program with a tie for first in basketball between Phi Sigma Epsilon and Mu Epsilon Nu. All star selections included Ormond Wedell and Paul Phillips from Phi Sigma Epsilon and Leonard Aubuchon and Gorman Bradley from Mu Epsilon Nu.
The junior class selects Adventures of Grandpa as the three act farce to be staged Wednesday evening April 12 at City Hall. The act features a grandson wedding ruse for money and a quarantine visit with comic mishaps including a French dancing mistress and a Copenhagen maid. Cast will be four men and five women with Miss Neher Miss Nichol and Miss Curry directing and sponsoring. Tryouts face delays due to book shortages, possibly today or Monday.
The memos describe a New York clock bought in 1860 by Mr Carle son’s father that still runs after 73 years. Local papers in Rackley and surrounding areas have focused on clocks and Oscar Carlson’s clock in Rackley.
A notice from mayoral candidate S D Blakeley and council candidates C H Freed E T Olson Carl Hammer Geo W Stromberg and J B Steer refutes rumors that Citizens Ticket will grant Kansas Power Company a new franchise if elected. The group invites citizens of Scandia to a meeting to express views and decide actions.
The note chronicles early steamship progress from 1833 to 1838 including the Sirius voyage London to New York in seventeen days and the Savannah voyage from Savannah to Liverpool in twenty six days. It compares paddle steamers and sailing vessels and notes steam aided capacity.
Thieves entered the Nordman estate home in Scandia formerly occupied by the Nunn family and tore bathroom fixtures from walls. Water flooded the house with several inches covering the floor and basement. The burglary appeared to be interrupted by water or neighbors approaching, leaving substantial damage.
Governor Alf M. Gandoa proclaims April 9 to 15 as Clean Up Week in Kansas in cooperation with the State Fire Marshal. The proclamation urges patriotic support to employ the unemployed and renovate property, reduce fire hazards, and improve life and property safety across the state. Signed in Topeka on March 15, 1933, with Secretary of State Frank J. Ryan and Assistant Secretary E. Hill assisting.
The Kansas clash with the federal government over the 3.2 beer law heads to a test. Attorney General Roland Boynton argues the statute is violated. In Wichita Ernest Chapman readies a major beer sale after April as lawyers plan to defend the sale. Police say the malt beverage is not legal under current law.
Scandia merchants prepare a cooperative Trade Day on April 8 with free tickets from April 3 to 8 for a chance to win baby chicks. Hanson’s Hatchery Clyde will supply 100 top quality chicks and many prizes are planned for Scandia week crowds.
Last Wednesday snow fell softly and stayed with no wind. Thursday night rain arrived statewide and by Friday morning about an inch was recorded here. The slow fine rain soaks into soil and delights farmers.
J. P. Cammack state fish and game warden departed by motor for Laredo and San Antonio and may proceed to Eagle Pass to buy about 8,000 quail for liberation in Kansas. He expects to be gone roughly two weeks.

Cars are checked for lights and brakes while trucks must display Kansas license plates and permits. The aim is to catch tax and registration evasions and ensure all vehicles are compliant.
The 52nd annual Messiah festival at Bethany College in Lindsborg runs April 9 to 16. Palm Sunday opening features Handel’s Messiah by the famous chorus directed by Hagbard Bras. Easter Sunday concert at 8 p.m. marks the 153rd Messiah performance.
