After a week of suspense the banks begin reopening in federal reserve cities on Monday, with others following by midweek. President Roosevelt and Secretary Woodin push strict banking measures to curb hoarding, reassure deposits, and ensure access to funds for legitimate business.
In Jewell county Kansas on the Verhage farm a Jersey ox team is being trained for driving. The preparation is part of a spring Forty-Niner entertainment staged by the Norton American Legion. The piece notes the return of pioneer days as time changes things.
Rev and Mrs Torgeson and Rev and Mrs Danielson with son Paul shared supper with Rev and Mrs Chas Pehrson. This was the second meeting of Lutheran pastors and wives in the area. Monthly meetings are planned for mutual edification and pastoral work discussions.

School board members from all districts meet at Belleville High School at 1 30 to discuss salaries for the coming year. Six board members will present salary reduction proposals while one rural board recently raised the instructor's pay by five dollars per month. Local board members and all Scandia teachers expect to attend.
The Methodist Church announces a Thursday social and officer election for the Epworth League, a Friday social for Young Married Folk, a Saturday religious instruction class, and a Sunday 10 a.m. church school with an 11 a.m. service. The Epworth League to present a musical program. 103 attended last Sunday. Pastor B. W. Selin invites all.
The Presbyterian United Brethren Church held Sunday School at 10 a m with Miss Neher leading a special class during the morning service. Junior C E met at 3 30 with Matilda McDowell as leader. A meeting last Sunday afternoon drew interest. C E gathers at Miss Genevieve Freed home at 7 15 p m for a trip around the world. Ships wait for no one. Welcome In Circle will meet March 22 at Mrs C V Haggman’s home. 2183 Folger bands were collected and sent in. Thanks to all who furnished bands. Friendship Club meets Aid Room March 23.
Reports from nearby cities note gasoline thefts from parked autos. Thieves siphon fuel, resell cheaply, and quickly depart. In Scandia similar losses are reported. Park cars in well lit areas to deter theft.
A string of about thirty-five major earthquakes shakes Southern California with Long Beach near the epicenter. Five thousand are injured and property losses reach into millions as rescue squads, Marines and the American Legion work to aid the wounded and begin reconstruction amid fear of disease spread and disrupted water supply.
Rhinelander Wisconsin report says Jerry Bentley, a lumberjack, left his duties to back the underdog in the Northern Wisconsin amateur basketball tournament. His roaring support helped his team win and he received a sledge hammer as a reward for his enthusiastic cheering.
Next Saturday evening March 18 at 8:00 the Chick Boyes Players stage Tropical Love a scenic South Seas production with special scenery and electrical effects. Admission 10 cents with trade tickets from local merchants.
The Concordia Junior High Gym hosted the church tournament finals last night. Jamestown defeated Concordia Christians 80-29 to claim first place while Christians took second. United Brethren of Concordia beat Kackley Ada Lutheran 33-27 for third, with Kackley Lutherans fourth.
The notice invites members to Sunday School with Bible class at 10 and Morning Worship at 11. A Lenten offering for the synodical budget will be received, with mid week services each Wednesday until Good Friday. Pastor T. Orlin Torgeson urges attendance and Bible study for guidance and wisdom.
John Fredlund was jailed on burglary charges after police linked stolen property to his cabin north of Scandia. Carrow confessed to petty robberies in Scandia and implicated Fredlund as an accomplice. Authorities anticipate further action and the case may go to district court if sustained.

A Topeka legislature session ended with the death penalty bill failing by three votes. Proponents argued deterrence while opponents said capital punishment offers no better outcome, aligning with views in Kansas where the policy has faced strong opposition.
Effective March first Rock Island reduced cream rates about forty percent to compete with trucks. A five gallon can of cream to Omaha now costs twenty one cents, vs thirty two cents previously. All other rates to points are equally reduced.
San-Ore Construction Company of McPherson completes graveling from the Jewell County line to a point one mile east of Rydal. Work used seven trucks from the Edlund farm gravel pit northwest of town. The firm holds a five year lease on the pit. Equipment ready to move back to McPherson. Gravel pumped has been high grade.

Last Tuesday around 6 pm an accident on Highway 86 one mile west of Courtland involved Naomi Rickel of Republic driving a Model A Ford delivery and failing to stop. Her car collided with a Buick coupe driven by Helen Taggart of Courtland, owned by James Taggart, who was a passenger and suffered severe facial and arm injuries as the car pinned his arm against a culvert. Helen Taggart escaped injury. Noble Forsberg Ruth Rickel and Evelyn Eliot were other passengers, all uninjured.
About ten men from Ada Lutheran Church at Kackley lead excavation for a new basement under the stone church. Volunteers provide labor and coffee while women supply meals, planning a 30 by 66 foot space with kitchen facilities for social events and Sunday School, aiming for completion before Easter.
Kansas State Marshal Tovelas A. Graham reports a February 1933 fire loss drop with 298 dwelling fires 28 garage fires and 20 barn fires. Roof sparks caused 101 fires but $22 366 in damage. unknown causes led to $157 235 across 76 fires. Sixty eight of 105 counties reported losses, higher than usual.
Last Sunday evening about forty Epworth League members from the local Methodist Church traveled to Wayne to put on a program at the Wayne church. The event featured instrumental music speaking and reading numbers. Refreshments were served to the Scandia visitors by the Wayne congregation.
The city caucus will be held Friday evening at City Hall to nominate candidates for mayor police judge and five councilmen. Secret labor group session last Monday discussed political possibilities. Incoming officials to be elected April 1933 face major responsibilities. Royal and patriotic citizens urged to attend Friday.
