New Tax Rules Expand Exemptions for Educational and Charitable Bodies

Kansas sales tax rules now exempt purchases by non profit charitable groups such as American Red Cross Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts when used in their institutions. Exemptions cover food bandages drugs X ray equipment beds lighting and building materials but exclude homes for staff and ministerial residences. Educational and religious bodies gain exemptions for building materials and related items used exclusively in those institutions. All exemptions require proper certificate of exemption. A new ruling on community sales and auctions also issued.

Recreation Plans for Scandia Club Tennis Court Surfacing

The Scandia Recreation Club committee met last Tuesday to plan surfacing the school tennis court using salt from nearby salt mines west of Salina. Mrs. O G Lowell was chosen to help organize women’s softball teams. Lee Swanson, the recreation supervisor, teaches swimming to a group of boys at the gravel pit northwest of town.

Survey to connect highway in Scandia area this week

State engineers surveyed the route to link the new road from Grant Avenue in the north city limits to Highway 36 north of the Scandia school house. Lines were run to connect the old and new roads but definite plans remain unknown.

Truck and car collide at drug store corner

An empty oil truck driven by Lafe Garst of Holdrege Nebraska and a 1936 Dodge sedan driven by David Greeger of Columbus Ohio collided at the drug store corner Sunday evening. Both vehicles suffered front-end damage and onlookers gathered. The Dodge was taken to Moe Garage for repairs. Greeger and James Thomas of Columbus Ohio are medical students at Ohio State University.

Virgil Baylie Named Manager of Metz Produce

Virgil Baylie of Mankato takes over management of the Metz Produce station, succeeding Gilbert Watson who was transferred to Clay Center. Baylie is an experienced produce man and has worked eight years at the Metz plant in Mankato. Mr and Mrs Watson departed for their new location Tuesday after running the station here for a year.

Condition Improves for H L Hampton at Home

H L Hampton has returned from St Joseph hospital in Concordia and is much improved though confined to home this week after a Sunday evening discharge.

New Road Section Opened After Construction Overrun

Traffic was routed over the new road section between five overflow bridges on Highway 36 west of Scandia after excess dirt was moved to allow access. State engineers accepted the five bridges on June 10, with clean-up work finishing the fill shoulders. Heavy rains loosened the surface causing deep ruts and impassable conditions, delaying travel as maintenance crews aided stalled vehicles.

Snow White to Show at Princess Four Days

Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will screen at the Princess Theatre in Scandia for four days from June 24 to 27. It marks the first appearance in Republic County of this RKO production after three years of work by Disney and a thousand artists. The feature is filmed in multiplane technicolor and features lively songs.

Old Wedding Gowns Highlight United Brethren Program

United Brethren church in Norway staged a Sunday School fashion show featuring gowns from 1873 to 1936. Mary Brewer wore the oldest dress from 1873 in Louisville Ohio. other wearers included Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Kellogg, and Mrs. Rinehart. The event closed with songs by Mrs. Rinehart and Miss Holgerson, followed by a luncheon.

Band Notes Plans Street Concert and Rehearsals

The band announces a Saturday evening street concert on June 25 at 8 p.m. All old timers and families are invited. Band rehearsal for all families is at the high school music room on Tuesday June 28 at 8 p.m. Beginners meet Tuesday and Thursday at 4 p.m. and advanced class at 8 p.m. Families urged to attend to see progress and discuss important matters.

Belleville Telescope editor L L Coleman has purchased The Mobridge Tribune at Mobridge South Dakota. M E Hitchcock from The Telescope joins as partner. Luman Miller will assume Coleman’s vacated role as Mobridge editor with other staff advances planned. Coleman resigns as Sixth District Youn Republicans chairman June 21.

Home Oil buys transport truck for Derby to Wichita runs

The Home Oil and Supply Co. added a gas transport truck to haul gasoline from the Derby Refinery in Wichita. A Chevrolet truck was purchased in Belleville with a large trailer and tank in Wichita. Gus Bentsen and Doug Las Gunter drove the truck to Wichita and back with Derby Products completing the first home owned transport trip.

Community plans seventieth anniversary beard grow challenge

A group of business men and townspeople pledge to grow beards mustaches Van Dykes and other facial hair ahead of the Scandia Picnic and Republican River bridge dedication July 28 29 and 30. Penalties apply for shaving or not cooperating as committees and participants organize speeches concessions finance entertainment and other event duties for the celebration now set for August 4 5 and 6.

Belleville Airport Hangar Burns in Fire

A Belleville city hangar at the Belleville airport was destroyed by a fire last Saturday night with damages near 25000 dollars. The blaze discovered about 11 pm by resident James Henry west of Belleville, origin undetermined. Built ten years ago, the hangar was once operated by Rothman Air Lines but has been idle for years and now serves storage while the field is farmed.
