Do as You Please Day Celebrations In Concordia

Concordia hosts a Fourth of July festival with free features throughout the day at the city park and Fairgrounds. Activities include a blue rock shoot, sack and potato races, tennis, swimming, a band concert, chase games for under 14, a Ban Johnson league baseball clash between Concordia and Beloit, free merry go round rides, and a fireworks display at the high school athletic field. A 9:30 p.m. fire dive and an Old Time and Modern dance at the Wycoff pavilion cap the day.

Letter case added for Scandia Post Office route

A new letter case was added to Scandia Post Office equipment on Monday. Jim Brown, carrier of Route No 1, will use the case to handle rural mail for his route. He previously used two smaller cases after Routes 1 and 2 were combined. The case was shipped from Fayetteville Arkansas.

Cement poisoning case at Jewell county bridge job

John Strand contracted cement poisoning while working for Cook and Ransom Construction Co. on Highway 14 bridge work in Jewell county. He has been under medical care by Dr. V. Hageman since last Friday.

Ada Lutheran Church presents Sunday School and Bible classes at 10 AM, morning worship at 11, and an evening service at 8. The choir will rehearse on Sunday evening after Bible study due to Independence Day. Swedish services are next Sunday morning.

Amana Circle meets at Mrs. Adolph Swanson’s home and Trinity Circle gathers at Mrs. Willis’s for a covered dish dinner and quilting this Friday. Boys camp starts July 10 costing 5.50 with meals at home. Sunday School 10, worship 11, vesper 5, lunch 6. Priscilla Circle to serve with Mrs. A Anderson in charge. Open to members and nonmembers. The young people meet at seven.

Union open air services begin at City Hall park

Summer union open air church services start next Sunday at 8 PM in City Hall park. Residents of Scandia and surrounding areas urged to attend each Sunday evening throughout the season. Warren Nelson and Paul Albro will perform two musical numbers. The theme is Army and Navy Forever. Each night a different church will preside with a speaker from another cooperative church. AFC has provided song books for all attendees. These services have a history of strong attendance.

Local Residents Buy New Cars This Week

Several community members purchased cars over the past week. Jim Brown bought a Ford sedan, Fred Reasoner a Studebaker sedan, Joe Johnson a Chevrolet sedan, John Hooker a Plymouth sedan, and Emer Larson a Chevrolet sedan.

Stranger Tries Selling Fish Here Face 60 Day Sentence

Ed Eaton of Junction City attempted to sell a catfish to deputy game warden Charles P. Nordman in a Kansas river area. Eaton pled guilty in County Court before Judge Henry Van Natta and received 60 days in jail plus a 50 dollar fine and 10.18 dollars in costs. His boat and gear were confiscated by the game department.

Stores Close From Twelve To Five July Fourth

Most Scandia businesses will close around noon on July 4 with grocery stores and some others reopening at 5 pm. Rural mail deliveries halt, but the post office stays open with general delivery from 9 to 10 am and 5 to 6 pm for patrons to pick up mail.

Niece of local people becomes airline stewardess

Miss Etta Haussermann a Scandia native and niece of Mrs. Jake Weislogel and Fred Haussermann flies Newark to Chicago as an American Airlines stewardess. She is among eight registered nurses trained as stewardesses, selected from applicants who pass strict physical and nursing-ability standards.

Ralph Hawkins Promoted To New Printing Position

Ralph Hawkins, assistant printer at The Journal, began Monday with Belleville Publishing Co. in a higher role. He previously held the Devils position, learned under Harry E. Moller, then Ralph Clark, and most recently worked eighteen months with Walter Berger. He is described as a hard worker eager to learn.

1939 Market Act explained marketing quotas for wheat

The 1939 Market Act allows emergency marketing quotas for wheat if supplies threaten to exceed normal domestic use and exports by more than 85 percent. Quotas hinge on a national referendum and a two thirds farmer vote, with a 15 cent per bushel penalty for over-quota sales.

Two Girls Injured in Concordia Car Crash

Two St Joseph Training School students Evelyn Powers and Louise Demaris were injured when their car overturned on a county road near Concordia Mississippi. Powers suffered a fractured neck vertebrae and Demaris a dislocated hip while Clair Mullen and Ovid Mossberg escaped with minor injuries. The Hoar couple arrived later in a second car.

Bettises Plan Trip to Gettysburg Commemoration

Mr. and Mrs. A M Bettis left Monday for Gettysburg Pennsylvania to attend the 76th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Gettysburg to which Mr Bettis has been invited.

First 1938 Wheat Load Reaches Derby Grain Co

The first new wheat of 1938 arrived at Derby Grain Co delivered by Joseph Johnson from northwest of Scandia. It tested 54 pounds per bushel and was spread to prevent molding due to high moisture and white caps. A second 56 pound load followed, with harvests delayed by rain and high moisture. farmers expect ripening in a few days with drying winds aiding storage readiness.

Farmer Lars A. Brown Takes His Own Life

Lars A. Brown a well known farmer living northwest of Scandia died Monday morning by shooting himself in the left chest with a twelve gauge shotgun. Ill health is believed to have caused the act. His funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 2:15 from the Hampton Danielson Funeral Home and 2:30 at the Methodist Episcopal Church with Rev J E Englund officiating. Burial was in Riverview cemetery.

Human skull found near Scandia during gravel digging

Johnn David Shivvers reported a human skull unearthed two miles northwest of Scandia at a Ross Gravel Co site. The skull’s top portion surfaced with gravel pumped from the three week operation and was screened with other coarse material.
