Wheat crop insurance rates fixed for 1939 in Republic County

Farm Bureau records guide 75 percent coverage at two thirds to two and a half bushels per acre and 50 percent at one half bushel per acre. Rates depend on six year farm yields and soil fertility with a six tenths bushel minimum premium. If yields are unavailable an appraisal yield may be used. Applications accepted at the Republic County Farm Bureau office until seeding.

Last Rites for Hugh Fraser Held at local church

Last rites for Hugh Fraser were conducted at the Methodist Episcopal church on Wednesday June 8 at 2 30 pm Rev J E Englund presiding. A mixed quartet sang The Old Rugged Cross and Some Sweet Day with Mrs Ed Wires and Miss Blanche Haggman performing A Song of Trust. The sermon titled The Many Mansions in Our Fathers House followed. The Masonic lodge attended in a body and provided pallbearers while honorary pallbearers were named. Interment occurred at Riverview Cemetery with Masons in charge.

Saviors Lutheran Norway Sunday School and Choir Schedule

Tergeson pastor announces Sunday School with Bible Classes at 10 o'clock and a Sunday evening devotional program at 8. This Thursday we host the Ada and Scandia Lutheran Churches for a Bible Study led by Rev Danielson. Tuesday choir rehearsal and August convention music ordered. Confirmands meet for instruction on Tuesdays.

Picnic at Amana Lutheran Bible School

Amana Lutheran M C Linnerson Pastor announces a Friday afternoon Bible School picnic. Children meet at the church 1:00 PM to walk to picnic grounds. Pot luck supper invites all, with vesper at 5 PM, luncheon 6 PM, morning worship 11, Sunday School 10, Young People 7, choir 8. Teachers meet at Norway tonight.

Sabbath School at 10:00 a m and morning worship at 11 for the Presbyterian Church. The minister will hold a service at Rydal at 9:45 next Sunday. The filing period for nomination petitions or declarations ends at noon Monday June 20. No party nominations on independent petitions can be filed after that date. County tickets are filling, township caucuses occur this week, and party affiliation changes must be filed by Saturday July 2.

The Kansas Wesleyan Philharmonic choir plans a 1500 mile Southwest tour to New Orleans next year led by director Leon Willgus. Willard Nelson of Scandia, last year’s member, joins a schedule of four long trips aimed at educational value through varied city atmospheres.

At a special meeting in the Masonic Temple the Scandia Community Club outlined the Scandia Picnic, opening of the New Republican River bridge, and 70th anniversary celebrations by the Scandianavian Agricultural Society on July 28 29 and 30. English Reappointed Postmaster in Scandia

Postmaster W. S. English received a commission after Senator Capper announced Senate approval of his reappointment. English has served since May 1, 1934, succeeding G. Parlee Plotner, and now begins another four year term through 1942.

Poison bait campaign to combat grasshoppers in Scandia

Poison grasshopper bait will be mixed at Preble's Garage in Scandia on Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week. Sodium arsenite and mill feeds supplied by the federal government. molasses saw dust and labor by the county. Farmers must provide a dozen lemons or onions per hundred pounds of bait. Scandia Sanitarium Moves to Grant Avenue

The Scandia Sanitarium relocated from the Weisingel house on Cloud Street to Grant Avenue south of the Presbyterian church. The first floor will house the bath house while the O. V. Nichols family occupies the second floor. The facility had been on Main Street until 1934 and run in Scandia by George and Dr. O. V. Nichols for 14 years.

Old Scandia Ice House Razed for Tennis Wall

Workers demolish the old Scandia ice house and reuse the rock to build the tennis court retaining walls across from the school, a project organized by Republic county NYA boys under the National Youth Administration. The ice house’s ice supply fed local restaurants and stores before modern refrigeration.

Harry L. Hampton was taken to St. Joseph hospital in Concordia for pneumonia treatment. His condition remains satisfactory per hospital reports after he became ill last Saturday.

650 Year Old White Oak Dies on Trace Mountain

The ancient white oak near Williamson West Virginia, claimed by timbermen as one of the world’s largest and 650 years old, died after failing to bud this spring. A. W. Lee of Island Creek Coal Co Holden declared it dead. The tree stood 146 feet tall with a 30 foot girth and over 177000 feet of lumber inside.

Senator Carl E. Friend of Lawrence a lumberman and former yard owner seeks the Republican nomination for Lieutenant Governor. He ran in 1936 nearly winning amid the New Deal landslide and cites that close loss as motive to test the race again. He grew up in several Kansas towns and built a major Lawrence lumber business.

Heavy Rain Hits Territory Causing Farm Damage

A half inch of rain fell early Tuesday morning followed by an inch in ten minutes in the afternoon. A heavy wind damaged rye and oats on heavy soils while many limbs broke from halfdead trees. Farmers say wheat escaped significant harm.
