Scandia rallies from a 1-0 deficit to beat Mankato 5-3 after a three-hit first inning by Mankato. Gordon Berry pitched for Scandia, Mankato’s late rally included a two-run homer, and key plays by Hurd Larson and Johnson helped preserve the win.
Seandia Cookies fell 7-6 at Narka last Thursday as Thayne Larson and Jim McDonald homered in a strong team effort. On Sunday Republic hosted a 14-9 defeat with the squad rallying for multiple hits.
The Scandia Reds beat Courtland 11 10 Friday evening at home and then defeated Miunden 12 3 Monday. The Scandia Blues start a home series Wednesday, with Jamestown visiting June 23. Reds travel to Cuba for their first away game on Friday June 20.
Seventy five Y Teen girls from the Kansas District closed a week at Camp Fellowship Goddard with a World Fellowship banquet. Attendees wore costumes from different countries as Mrs. Caubla shared Vietnam hospital experiences with Project Concern.
Mr and Mrs Sigrid Larsen traveled from Fergus Falls Minnesota to visit his sister Mrs Frank Isaacson and other relatives returning home Saturday their trip documented in a local social note.
Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Morehead of Fairbury mourn the death of their nephew Pfc. Gearold L. Brandt in Vietnam on June 10. Brandt was a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Morehead of Belleville. The Moreheads visited with Brandt’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Harold Brandt in Salina after being notified on Saturday.
Emil Pearson, longtime Scandia resident, left town weeks ago to visit friends in central Kansas near Assaria and intended to return to Sweden for his sixth homeland trip. C. O. Johnson says Pearson planned to travel to southern Sweden after the visit, having sold his Scandia farm in early 1967 before a trip abroad.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Scott of Albuquerque New Mexico were Monday afternoon and overnight guests of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Boyles. Scott, once head of the Reclamation Bureau office here, and Mrs. Scott had attended a meeting in Rochester New York. Friday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Erickson were Mr. and Mrs. E J Elliott Laguna Hills California Mr. and Mrs. John Sankey Republic and Mr. and Mrs. Lyell Ocobock.
Richard Melby of Scandia and Orrin Lovewell of Courtland attend Cadet Lawman Academy in Salina this week. Trainees stay six nights at the Kansas Highway Patrol training center with sponsors from the patrol and Kansas American Legion. The program aims to spark interest in law enforcement among junior boys.
A religious drama titled A Mighty Fortress was presented to a large Jamestown Methodist Church gathering. The Kings Players from Asbury College Wilmore Kentucky featured 14 students portraying the Whitmans missionaries to Oregon Territory in the early 1800s. The production mixed hardship with humor and highlighted Narcissa Whitman’s care for orphans and an Indian boy’s mischief as rival Tom Wilson spreads lies leading to the Whitmans death.

Mrs. Ruby Wray age 62 died of cancer Sunday June 1 at El Centro Community Hospital. She lived at 221 E Highway 80 El Centro California and had 39 years in the county. Born near Scandia Kansas April 29 1907 she was active in Grace Lutheran Church and Meadows Union Home Department. Funeral 10 a.m. Wednesday June 4 at Hems Bros El Centro Chapel Rev Paul W Harting. burial Evergreen Cemetery. Survived by husband Neal L Wray two sons Neal H and Dale D a brother Warren Johnson Scandia Kansas a sister Lois Houslder Belleville Kansas and four grandchildren.
Annette Clouse announces Republic County will host the Tri County 4-H Home Economics Judging School on Tuesday June 24 at the National Guard Armory on U S 81. Registration starts 1:00 pm and judging begins 1:30 pm. Cloud and Ottawa counties participate. Competitors judge foods clothing and home improvement classes.
More than an inch of rain fell on Tuesday easing field conditions. Rain came slowly from morning through afternoon with little run off and no packing, overall beneficial for crops. Ripening wheat drooped but may improve with cooler weather and pest risk. Wednesday forecast calls for fair skies with some ground fog.
The northeast corner of Norway township was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Russell Fraser for 34000 after bidding on 160 acres owned by the Mary Kelly Estate. The sale occurred Monday evening at the National Guard Armory in Belleville with auctioneer Eugene Waring. Melvin Jensen and family bought the four room house in Norway for 1100.

Missionary nurse Jeanette Isaacson of Liberia West Africa arrived in Scan ia after flying from Africa on May 31. She spent time sightseeing in Europe and came to New York on Thursday. She is the daughter of Mrs Anjeanette Isaacson and granddaughter of Mrs Wetzel.
Sharon Ranft participated in the 23rd annual Co-op Youth Leadership Camp held June 9 to 12 at William Jewell College in Liberty Missouri. Farmland Industries headquartered in Kansas City sponsored the event.
Mr and Mrs Larry Smith and children Vicki Steve and Nancy left Monday morning for North Dakota where Larry will be employed at the Garrison Dam. They spent the weekend with relatives and were dinner guests Saturday of Mr and Mrs Jack Smith.

Gordon Berry received the Most Valuable Player trophy at the Cornhusker Basketball Clinic held last week in Lincoln Nebraska. It marked Berry and Jeff McDonald’s second year attending the event with first time attendees Ron Aspeyren Dana Brewer Jim McDonald Kent and Thayne Larson.
Peggy Erickson daughter of Mr and Mrs O W Erickson Scandia Kansas senior nursing student at Asbury Hospital School of Nursing Salina has completed three month affiliation with Children s Mercy Hospital Kansas City Missouri She is now in three month affiliation with Larned State Hospital Upon completion she will return to school for Maternity and New born and Leadership Nursing learning experience She is due to graduate in May 1910.
Carl Peterson returned home from St. Joseph Hospital after several weeks there. Mrs. Elmer Danielson had eye surgery at St. Joseph Hospital last Friday. Mrs. Ben Lervold left Republic County Hospital and is now in Hadley Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation wing Room 245 in Hays Kansas. Lois Nelson of Beloit visits her grandmother Mrs. L. B. Richards for a few days.
