Scandia Unified School District appoints 7th board member

The Scandia USD board met on June 9 at Scandia High Attendance Center and appointed Delbert Aspegren as a seventh board member per new state law. They approved school repairs, summer school law purchases, and a cooperative program plan for educable and retarded children in line with Senate Bill No. 31. A new state rule requires tuition payments to Vo-Tech schools for district students. the board also approved a one mill levy for next year to fund this tuition. Two Scandia athletes competed at the Junior Olympics in Lawrence Kansas with Randy Zohn finishing 38th in shot put, 4th in discus, and 6th in the other event, and Mike White placing ninth in the 100 yard dash and 14th in the mile.

Local Legion Baseball Falls to Concordia 17 to 9

The American Legion team lost 17 to 9 at Concordia on Wednesday. Morrowville replaced Cuba on the schedule. Scandia beat Belleville 12 to 11 after leading early but could not close out the game.

Scandia Cookies posted two home victories last week. They defeated Courtland 19 to 9 on Thursday night at Scandia Field and beat Norway 19 to 6 Sunday evening at the same venue.

Scandia Peewee Blues Open Season with Big Win at Jamesown

Scandia Peewee Blues opened season with a decisive win at Jamesown last Tuesday. On Monday June 9 they beat Norway 16 to 4. Manager Charles Klima leads the team. Scandia Reds also won two games at home against Republic 7 to 6 and against Narka. Pitchers Marvin Herrman and Gary Loring started for the Reds.

Assignment in Wisconsin Sends Clark Family Relatives Visit

Rev and Mrs Gary Clark with Scott and Joey of Delphos were weekend guests of relatives here. They left Monday for his assignment at a United Methodist Church in Wisconsin. Lt Walter Visits Family During Short Thailand Leave

Lt Dick Walter, stationed in Thailand since July, arrived Saturday for a brief visit with Mrs Walter and Danae before departing Tuesday for Ft Hood Texas. He also visited his parents Mr and Mrs Ralph Walter in Belleville. New Plumbing and Decorating Business Opens in Paint Pot Building

Joe Douglas, an area plumber for about two years, has bought the Paint Pot building along Highway 36. The exterior is painted and the interior shows carpeting, ceramic tile, and bathroom furnishings samples. The Douglases plan to sell and install carpets and ceramic tile and will offer a full line of plumbing equipment.

Miller family welcomed to Scandia in community event

The Rev. Lyle Miller and his family were welcomed to Scandia with a grocery shower and reception at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The Swedish Singers performed and the Scandia welcome included friends from their former congregation and visiting families. Scandia Chapter 481 OFS Meets Honors June Birthdays

The Scandia Chapter 481 OFS held its June meeting on Tuesday June 3 at 8 00 pm with Mrs Charles Klima and Carl Peterson presiding. Important Office Fades Away At Century Mark

The Republic County Superintendent of Schools office closes after 100 years on June 30. Records will move to the Register of Deeds. birth certificates and teacher lists for the county will be available at the courthouse. Social Security Visit Planned in Belleville Kansas

Field Representative Jack Loftus of the Social Security Administration will tour Belleville on Tuesday June 17 1969. Citizens may call the Courthouse Basement between 10:00 and 2:00 for information. Farmers hiring workers this summer must deduct Social Security tax and report wages to the IRS if wages reach 150 or more cash or if a worker is employed 20 or more days in a year. Reports are due at year end with tax due, using forms available from the District Director of Internal Revenue.
