Placing At K C Dog Show And Local Rodeo Attendants

The Melhus family attended a Swope Park dog show in Kansas City where their German Shepherd pup Py won second place in his group. Loisann Tuley was named an attendant to Miss Rodeo Belleville with Crossroads Saddle Club June 21 22 at Belleville. Melissa Melhus competed as a queen candidate among seven at the event. Elmer Melby left for Basalt Colorado after visiting relatives.

Local Girls Medal at Junior Olympics in Lawrence KS

Four girls from Minnesota entered events at the Junior Olympics in Lawrence Kansas on Friday June 6. Sheila Thompson from Scandia Grade School placed 12th in the 50 yard dash for 14 15 year olds. Virginia Wagner from Norway Grade School finished 9th in 550 yard dash and 10th in 100 yard dash. Cathy McDonald placed 12th in 550 yard dash. All listed field competed in heats with top two in each.

Nelsons Honored at Pot Luck Supper Before Chicago Move

Mr and Mrs Darrell Nelson were honored with a Sunday pot luck at the home of Mr and Mrs Larry Hobson and family before their move to Chicago Illinois. Darrell will join Northern Illinois Gas Company in Personnel and Management after July 1st. Guests included Alphildard Leonard Johnson Mrs J R Johnson Hans Nelson and Lloyd Nelson.

Scandia Legion Narrowly Drops Beloit 5 4 In closishTilt

Scandia American Legion battled Beloit Sunday but fell 5-4 as late errors and tense moments cost the visitors. Hockett pitched for Scandia in the Beloit game while Eddie Johnson toed the mound in the postponed Thursday matchup ending 8 1 with Clifton on the receiving end. Frustrations kept Scandia in a slump heading into a 10-1 loss to Red Cloud on Friday night, with near equal hits and errors overall.

Cookie teams split with two squads and schedule

The former Scandia Cookies split into two teams of twelve. Erick Erickson leads the younger group with Maurice Lervold and Lonnie Boeman as assistants, following Jamestown’s schedule after dropping from the league. The older squad, coached by Stan Estes, hosts Belleville’s Alsop on Thursday June 26. Scandia also lost 7-5 to Cuba last Thursday with Jim Melby hitting the only home run in the third inning.

The Peewee Reds won 7-5 at Cuba on Friday night. The Blues claimed two wins at home: 4-1 over Courtland on Wednesday and 15-8 against Jamestown on Monday.

Severt Hanson of Bardall died Tuesday aged 91. Brother Lars Hanson of Scandia is listed as one of two surviving siblings. No other details were available at press time.

Fitting and Showing School Held at Republic County Fairgrounds

Republic County hosted a Fitting and Showing School at the fairgrounds on Monday June 23 with about 200 4 H members from Cloud Clay Jewell Mitchell and Republic counties. Livestock classes included beef dairy swine sheep and horses. Demonstrations were assisted by Darrell Hosie Karen Carlson Dick George and K L Carlson.

Eye on Weather After Central Kansas Storms

Unsettled conditions linger in central Kansas with warm humid air and rain threats through mid week. A squall line Sunday brought 1 to 4 inches of rain with hail and wind in places, while the Norway area saw field damage. Local residents Dick Senner and family aided the storm response in Salina including search and hospital visits.
