Five Overflow Bridges Under Construction on Scandia River Road

Test piling for five overflow bridges on the new road between the West end of the river bridge and the drainage ditch is underway by Hanser Construction Co. The east end of the west approach is nearing grade, with the road bed rising 22 feet high. Contractors will use the piling data to bid on the bridge project, as the riverbank fills and approaches take shape.

Deshler Defeats Scandia in Ten Inning Showdown

The Deshler baseball club beat Scandia 3 to 2 in ten innings. Scandia managed four hits, with Glen Currie collecting two. Cahill pitched for Scandia while Clegg and Trout pitched for Deshler. Scandia will face Republic Sunday at Pawnee Park.

Jasper Bettis Dies in Topeka At 92

Jasper Newton Bettis, Civil War veteran and brother of A. M. Bettis, died at his Topeka home last Friday at age 92. He had lived in the community 40 years, moving to Topeka in 1910. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Swedish Methodist Church with Rev. R. Ci Cont officiating. Burial followed at Riverview Cemetery.

Grasshopper Poison Campaign Opens For Farmers

County Agent H J Adams says grasshopper poison is being prepared by township committees. Farmers must supply bran and sawdust for bait using sodium arsenate with care. A campaign will distribute poison from the Farm Bureau office to farms suffering immediate hopper damage, with hay harrow strips left to reduce bait needs.

Former Norway Resident Buried Sunday

George W. Schrivner 77, former Norway community resident, died June 9 at Londsmith Wisconsin, buried in Norway Sunday. Services at United Brethren Church at 2:00 pm conducted by Rev. B. W. Selin of Scandia. Survived by wife Bettie Logsdon, one daughter and three sons. Family left area in 1915 moving to Wisconsin.

Republic County 4-H Delegates Attend Manhattan Roundup

Republic County 4-H clubs sent youths to Manhattan State College for the annual 4-H Club Roundup. Delegates included Evan Lash, Donald McKenzie, Wayne Talmo, Donald Eichmann, Lois Reed, Andrew Olson, Cora Belle Stewart, and others. They traveled June 7 with county agent Henry J. Adams for a week of judging and training expected to benefit their local clubs.

Play to be given for Emergency Relief Fund

Birthday honors for E. V. Moore longtime veterinarian

E V Moore, grandfather of Kansas youngest sheriff Curtis S Moore and father of former sheriff Andy Moore, celebrated his 75th birthday near Norway with about 50 relatives. He and Mrs Moore were named oldest pioneers at a Belleville old settlers meeting last autumn. The gathering drew relatives from distant states. Moore has long practiced veterinary medicine in the Norway community.

Field Day Draws 1000 Farmers In Kansas Nebraska Tour

About 1,000 men attended the fourth annual field day in the Watershed of the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation. Demonstrations on two farms showed soil and water conservation methods. Speakers included Dean Harry Amberger of Kansas State College and J K Landon, State Coordinator, at a pasture northwest of Mankato. Lunch was served.
