Scandia School Board Hires Three New Teachers

Scandia school board fills three vacancies this week by hiring Marianna Ozmont for high school journalism, Trella Reiber for vocational home economics, and Ruby Johnson for the lower grades. Ozmont comes from Atwood with a B S in journalism and English and is pursuing a master’s at Emporia. Reiber, from Kincaid, holds a B S from Hays Teachers College and has four years teaching experience. Johnson holds an Emporia Teachers College life certificate and will teach the lower grades. former teacher La Verne Larson resigned and married Irvin Currie.

More Soaking Rains Benefit Local Crops

Heavy rains over ten days eased drought as soils absorbed moisture with minimal runoff. The community recorded about one half inch on a recent day and over four inches total in ten days. Cloudy skies and temperatures from 55 to 85 degrees aided crop health and growth.

John R Shotzman Dies in Anselmo Nebraska

John R Shotzman 73 a former resident died at his Anselmo Nebraska home May 24 after suffering a paralytic stroke March 31 He was the father of Mrs Ralph Lewellyn and brother of Mrs Lizzie Holmes of Scandia.

Russell Anderson Flung by Young Horse Near Rackley

Russell Anderson, a young farmer near Rackley, was kicked on the head last week after a bolt broke in the tongue of a hay rake he rode. A frightened horse kicked him above the left ear, requiring several stitches to close the wound.

Kansas sales tax tests merchants with token shortage

After a weeklong trial the new Kansas sales tax creates problems and new experiences for merchants and clerks as token supply strains emerge. The state tax commission wrestles with exemptions and token exhaustion as 20 million tokens were ordered with 3 million more en route and 10 million due before July 1, leaving some Scandia merchants without tokens.

Republican River Rises to Flood Stage

The Republican River rose to flood stage twice in the past week, backing water on low land and eroding banks that were cut by earlier floods. On Thursday morning Scandia reported a rise to four feet before receding, with the weekend crest nearly matching Thursday’s high. The crest passed Sunday night and has fallen about two feet since.

The Scandia Baseball Club will debut new uniforms funded by donations from 9 business firms and many individuals. Manager W. S. English says enough money was raised for 12 suits, each with donor names. Scandia beat Byron 9 to 4 with Cahill striking out 15 and Currie leading with three hits. Deshler to be the next guest.

J T Davis was poked by a fish hook on his right second finger Saturday night. An infection developed and he is receiving treatment at St. Joseph hospital in Concordia.
