Three Truks In Wrecks Prompt Speed Limit Across Fleet

Three Stamey and Tidd Construction trucks were damaged in separate incidents last week. Elzie McGraw, driver of a dirt truck, hit a Missouri Pacific freight car after visibility was blocked by a Derby elevator. Another collision occurred between a loaded semi and an empty truck at the river bridge. Drivers were uninjured, but trucks suffered damage. All Stamey and Tidd drivers were ordered not to exceed 20 mph to improve safety and vehicle condition.

Belleville Golden Jubilee Celebration Details

Belleville marks its fifty year city incorporation with a three day festival July 3 to 5. Old Settlers Day Saturday features Henry J. Allen as speaker, parade, baseball game and water stunts. Sunday dedicates pool and recreation park with Dr. F D Farrell as main speaker and a Chappell Choir concert. Independence Day features Congressman Carlson as orator, with fireworks and multiple events including sports and dances. Marysville and Concordia to play a Ban Johnson league game at Belleville Monday.

Picnic dates set by Scandia association this year

Officials of the Scandia Picnic Association have set July 24 as the dates for the annual picnic. The event is expected to draw residents and visitors for a day of community activities and food.

The U B Presbyterian in Norway and Scandia lists Sunday School at 10:00, morning worship at 11:00, a Christian Endeavor meeting at 7:00, and evening worship at 8:00. Men from the Norway Church lead a Father’s Day program during the Sunday school hour. all are invited and asked to bring a basket for noon fellowship.

Amana Lutheran Church Schedules Services and Pageant

The Amana Lutheran church under Pastor M C Linerson announces Sunday School and services at the usual times next Sunday with evening services at eight. Young People meet at seven at the parsonage. A vesper service last week drew good attendance and more are planned this summer. Five o clock services invite all to bring a covered dish and enjoy the evening. Pageant practice Friday night at 8:30. attendance is urgent as the show is near. Vacation Belial continues this week and next.

Francis Ruggles a senior at Courtland High School and a star athlete drowned at a pond near his uncle s farm southwest of Mankato last Wednesday evening. His brother Richard and two other boys watched from the bank as he faltered mid crossing and disappeared. After a two and a half hour search, the body was pulled from the pond with a hay rake. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Friday afternoon.

Officials promise aid for Highway 36 project

Five Washington Chamber of Commerce members traveled to Topeka to push for US 36 improvements in Washington county. State Highway Commissioner Evan Griffeth and District Highway Commissioner Gus Bengston pledged swift action and noted the Belleville Marysville corridor as an emergency major project. Griffeth said federal funds expected by July 1 would be applied to convert the route into an all weather road if received.

Jerry Kershner Accepts CCC Camp Duty

Cloud county treasurer and Reserve captain Jerry Kershner has been called to active duty with the CCC. Laura Nelson, deputy treasurer and treasurer elect, was appointed to fill the remainder of Kershner’s term. He is ordered to report to the district CCC office in Boise Idaho for assignment.

Leak Found in Belleville Municipal Swimming Pool

Water was turned into the new Belleville municipal swimming pool this week and a leak was discovered. Contractors are repairing the flaw with hope of full completion before the official dedication on July 4.

Former Scandia Barber Ted Denis Dies at 70

Ted Denis 70 once ran a Scandia barber shop about 25 years ago and later worked in Salina before moving to California where he died last Wednesday. He was brother in law to Mrs. Lulu Moe.

Frank Isaacson a farmer northwest of Scandia was trampled Saturday afternoon while spraying fly spray on horses. A frightened horse knocked him down and trampled him causing several broken ribs and bruises.

Olof Fogelberg Dies at 81 in Scandia Home

Olof Fogelberg, longtime Scandia resident and pioneer who immigrated to America in 1880, died last Saturday morning at his home at age 81. He farmed southeast of Scandia for over 30 years. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at his home with Rev. Miss Lucretia Keyes officiating. Burial followed in the Lutheran cemetery.

County Prison Labor Keeps Courthouse Grounds Trim

County board of county commissioners and the sheriff use prison labor to maintain the courthouse yard and nearby areas. During the past week prisoners trimmed dead trees and brush and cleaned offices and windows as preparations for the upcoming three day Golden Jubilee on July 3 4 and 5.

Wesley Paroutek a 50 year old farmer living two miles east and three miles south of Narka died after taking arsenic poison Sunday afternoon He left a wife and two grown sons survived by a well improved farm with promising crops The incident is reported as a death after self administered poison.
