A crop tour scheduled for today June 15 features national and state speakers to address attendees. Lunch will be served at the 4-H Club building at the Fair Grounds, with visits to crop test plots under the direction of the Farm Bureau and sponsored by County Agent H. J. Adams.
Mr and Mrs F L Miller departed Scandia Saturday evening to reside in Topeka for the summer. He has been chosen as assistant to the State Superintendent of Schools and will work in the State Department of Education on the Grade Rural State Curriculum.
The paper notes a unique Penholder carved from Oregon Myrtle Wood with a Government .30 rifle shell as the pen holder sent by Howard Davis of Sunbeam Idaho, brother of Jay Davis. Davis also sent Kodak views of Idaho mountains and fish strings from Yankee Fork and Sawtooth Mountain Lake. The staff plans a trip to make Sunbeam headquarters, praising the gift and scenery.
A petition signed by 663 residents asks the county clerk and board of county commissioners to replace the Sherdahl Republican River bridge 3 to 4 miles west of Sherdahl, damaged by the 1935 flood. Petitioners appeared before the board last week and the matter will be reconsidered at a later date.
Closing exercises were held in the Methodist church by the Union Vacation Bible School a joint effort of Presbyterian United Brethren and Methodist churches. Dr J C Everett oversaw with teachers Ed Robison Ruth McGregor Mrs Oscar Hardtaker Geraldine Lloyd Jayne and Bob Ewing and Rev Mrs J E Englund. The program included songs recitations and Bible stories across three departments. Saturday Dr Everett and Mrs Englund led students visiting 20 homes to sing for shut ins and deliver flowers.
Mr. and Mrs. Miller will reside in Washington after mid August as Mr Miller takes the role of superintendent of schools there next year.
Pete Heinen of Hein en Implement Co. Jewell City visited the Journal last week to greet the editor and Cap. Heinin placed an advertisement in the Journal highlighting bargains in used machinery for readers to act on.
The storms Thursday and Friday last week caused damage in many areas. Scandia saw about 4% inches of rain with little hail and no crop damage reported. Jamestown Randall region faced 50 to 100 percent wheat loss from hail and wind. Norway had damaged sheds and windmills with some hail. Missouri Pacific lines, Belleville, Superior, Guide Rock recorded rainfall. The river ran high but no flood damage reported as levels receded.
Kansas State Employment Service director Glenn L. Warders says there will be no demand for extra farm labor in Kansas during the wheat harvest. He notes inquiries from Massachusetts and Florida but reports plans to assist local labor referrals for farmers.
Dean W. Malott to assume the chancellorship on July 1 1939 succeeding E H Lindley who retires after 19 years at the University of Kansas Malott will be the first native Kansan and first University alumnus to hold the post.
Citizens push to convert the old county jail into a public library and museum to house pioneer relics. The plan seeks cooperation between Republic County and Belleville and has drawn public approval. Mr and Mrs G G Green and Mr and Mrs George Madlin of Randall were dinner guests of A D Paul on Sunday.
The Scandia Community Club sponsors the Band Benefit Play Behind Locked Doors directed by E C Wire at the high school auditorium 8 15 p m tonight and tomorrow night. The mystery comedy features Ada Jeandebeur N2 Aspegren Jimmy Larsen Bob Ewing John Nystrom Ercell Lindblad and others with musical numbers including God Bless America by Jimmy Larsen and a patriotic chorus. Tickets 10 and 25 cents.
