Lorna Mahan brought a very large hen egg to the Journal office last week. The egg looked like an ordinary large egg but had a very thin shell. Inside it lay another egg of normal size, containing both yolk and white.
Rainfall boosts wheat hopes in Republic County with about 1.6 inches fell across a weekend period and Tuesday night. Farmers report better prospects than previous drought affected years and expect a record wheat yield with alfalfa cut and corn stands improving though some fields damaged by drought and grasshoppers. Weather shifts from drought toward sufficient rainfall for good crop production.
Scandia baseball club defeated Aurora 13 to 8 as Dald Logston pitched seven innings with seven strikeouts, two hits, and two runs allowed. Cahill closed with three hits and one run in two innings while G Currie and D Thomas each had three hits for Scandia. Aurora pitchers Cutter and Valcore struggled as Scandia continued strong hitting. Byron visits the local club next Sunday afternoon.
A new backbar of modern design was installed at Hageman and Wires Drug Store last Friday, giving the storefront a more attractive front. The old backbar had been in Ed and Babe's Cafe. Nathan Isaacson returned to Kansas City Tuesday morning.

Miss Blanch Haggman donated the organ. Brotherhood meets tonight. Gloria Lee Nelson and Marcelene Perry vie to bring the most children to Bible School June 22 to July 2.
Sunday School and Bible Classes start at 10 o clock with a devotional program at 8 PM. Ladies Aid meets Thursday June 16 hosted by Mrs. P P Hammer. Vacation Bible School begins Monday morning June 7 at Norway High School. Jesus calls for children to come to him for salvation. All Sunday School children urged to attend daily.
Bernice Jackson is the new clerk at Hammer Grocery Store filling the position left by Bill Reece who has moved to Manhattan to work for Reece Construction Co.
The Augustana College Male Quartet of Rock Island Ill will give a concert Thursday evening June 17 at Ada Lutheran Church. Sponsored by the Luther League the group is acclaimed nationwide and praised as one of the finest collegiate quartets with growing recognition in professional circles. Their extensive tours and radio broadcasts have spread their name and built strong regional demand for appearances.
The House increased the 1938 Vocational Agriculture appropriation to 14 483 000 from 7 241 500, averting a potential blow to small schools like Scandia. The decision came last weekend as Congress boosted support for agricultural education programs.
Work began last Wednesday on regraveling U S 36 between Belleville and Washington. The project starts at the east edge of Belleville and proceeds toward Washington with gravel sourced from the Republican River five miles northwest of Clyde.

A four year old horse owned by Buster Moe broke its leg during a Monday runaway at Tony Gritten farm north of Scandia. The team driven by Fred Strom became frightened while hitched to a push rake, necessitating the horse's euthanization.
Ernest Nelson was re-elected to the position of director on the board of education at the annual meeting of the patrons of School District No. 6 held last Friday at the school building. Nelson is now starting his third term as director.

The Stamey and Tidd Construction Co completed the temporary gravel road on U S 36 near the west end of the new river bridge. Earth fill for the west approach is under way while the east end abutment fill is done. Hansen Construction Co builds the bridge abutment and places beams for the five span approach. over half the bridge floor is finished with completion expected in about two weeks.
The Lime stone Creek erosion study hosts the first annual field day in Mankato on June 3. Republic County Farm Bureau members and others are expected to attend a tour-like event reviewing grasses, terracing and erosion control. Speakers include H. Umberger of Kansas State College Extension and I. K. Landon of the Kansas Soil Conservation service.
Harry Leedom a brakeman on the Rock Island freight seriously injured the third finger on his left hand last Friday morning at Scandia station. He and O E Beach were loading a barrel of oil from a truck into a railroad car when the barrel slipped. He was taken to Belleville for medical aid.
Register of Deeds Josephine Houdek and Deputy Miss Collins filed and recorded a 2,078,000 mortgage covering 59 tracts of real estate in Kansas and other states. The loan from Western Light and Telephone Co to Continental Tindis and National Bank of Chicago appears with a supplemental charter mortgage filed in connection with the main instrument.
The American Legion will hold a meeting at Scandia on Friday, June 11, at 8:00 P M in the I O C F hall. All ex service men are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.

The Kansas sales tax of 2 percent on tangible personal property began Tuesday, with a token shortage at Scandia causing merchant questions. Retailers must collect the tax from consumers. professional services are exempt, and newspapers are taxable. Records must be kept, exemptions certified, and tax remitted by the 20th each month. It is unlawful to absorb the tax.
