Chicago 1933 World Fair A Century of Progress Opens

Chicago hosts the 1933 World’s Fair offering eighty-two miles of exhibits across fifty plus buildings. Admission is fifty cents for adults, twenty-five cents for children, with many displays free of charge. Private and government pavilions, amusements, and a midways area provide broad viewing and activities in a historic exposition setting.

Methodist Church Announces June Congregation Events

This Thursday evening the annual meeting of the congregation will be held and all members urged to attend. Saturday afternoon Class 1 in Religious Instruction meets for final rehearsal at the church. Next Lord's Day the Church School opens at 10 AM and at 11 AM the Class in Religious Instruction will be confirmed. A baptismal service and reception of members are planned. Sunday evening Epworth League meets at 7:30 and the regular service at 8. District superintendent Rev Carl Jensen will be with us June 18. Daily Vacation Bible School opens Monday June 19 with all four children urged to attend. Ladies Aid Society meets Thursday June 15 with officer elections and a pot luck supper. The Methodist Church invites all to its services.

Fred Brandstrom Skips Serious Injury in Narrow Escape

Last Saturday Fred Brandstrom backed into his yard and turned. the Model T steering buckled and the car plunged toward a fifteen foot drop. It struck a tree and wrapped a wheel, stopping before a fall. Brandstrom escaped unharmed despite vehicle damage.

First Lady F D Roosevelt Visits Kansas City

Last Monday the Kansas City Star describes the arrival of Mrs. F D Roosevelt in town. Mrs Kannier greeted the First Lady with a copy of Kansas Facts and accompanied by Mr Kannier she welcomed the prominent visitor to the depart.

City Aid Requested for Storm Stricken Liberal Week Proclaimed

Governor Landon issued a proclamation designating a week of June to aid Liberal following a tornado. The aim is to raise funds for rehabilitation and immediate needs for about 700 homeless residents. Scandia Red Grass Chapter has sent a check to assist Liberal victims.

Trinity Sunday Gospel Message at Church

Church notes announce Trinnity Sunday with Matthew 28 18 20 gospel for all the world. Sunday School and morning worship at usual hours. An offering for the janitor will be lifted. Vacation Church School Plans For June Under Way

Pastor W Selin announces Daily Vacation Church School from June 19 to 30 for ages four to fourteen. Registration day is June 16. Regular services on June 11 include Sunday School and Morning Worship at 11 00 am. The Junior C E meets Thursday at 3 30 pm. David Cunningham is Student Pastor.

Bible School To Open Soon In Scandia

Miss Gayl Tedrow will direct a two week Vacation Bible School starting Monday June 19. Sponsored by United Brethren Presbyterian and Methodist churches, sessions will be at United Brethren Church with basement space at the Presbyterian Church if needed. New textbooks, a complete curriculum including music Bible study recreation and hand work are planned.

Journal Museum Showcases Unusual Plant Growth and Sewer Roots

Mr. Gust Mystrom presented clover samples with unusually long thick roots, while Alfy Tingstrom and his men report a sewer flushing problem. They found a mass of roots about ten feet long entering through a small line aperture, forming a dense mat that blocked the pipes and required several men to remove it.

California Man Speaks in Scandia Churches

James E. Cooper of Calistoga California visiting at his sister's home spoke at the United Brethren Presbyterian Church in the morning and at the Methodist Church in the evening last Sunday. He was elected commissioner of the Redwoods Presbytery and represented his area at the Presbyterian Church international assembly in Columbus Ohio. Cooper is a farmer by vocation and is deeply interested in religious work.

Horses Hanged by Sand Storm In Elkhart

Reports from Elkhart describe a team of horses hitched to a telegraph pole behind the Penney store knocked down by a fierce wind. Sand blew away leaving the animals suspended. they died before discovery. Men attempted rescue, wind shifted, horses buried anew, and burial decision followed by a debate on epitaphs by the Commercial Club.

School Board Hires Teachers Amid Budget Curtailment

The Board of Education met after annual meetings to fill teaching posts for the coming year. Due to finances, some positions were cut and several teachers were hired or reassigned. New salaries are listed for F. L. Miller and others, with installments and new grade teachers receiving nine payments. No decision yet on Janitor selection.

State highway inspectors collect license fee totals

State Highway Department reports inspectors collected 2.38 in May for truck license tags and trucking permits. Most sales went to out of state truckers who faced mandatory tag purchases. A special detachment led by H Powers Anderson and E Remsburg checked old tags and issued tickets in Scamdia with a 48 hour grace period.

Knife Attack Reported Near Calnepyrree Park Incident

A band of traders in Calnepyrree Park allegedly pulled a knife during an attempted attack on Percy Shivvers as he confronted a disruptive man. Shivvers subdued the assailant with a stout stick and police arrested him, with a $9.25 fine imposed by Justice Larson. Another Belleville note mentions trouble entering cash a check.

Day Green Injured in Car Accident

A vehicle collision left Day Green with a hurt arm after a Greer and Day incident. The car continued moving as Mr Greer stumbled and fell, the arm injury occurring when the auto rolled over it. A tank fire was also reported and extinguished.
