Four New Civil Cases Filed In District Court

The court docket adds four civil cases including foreclosure of mortgage by the Federal Land Bank of Wichita against Mayme Freed of Courtland and recovery of money on notes by Charles W. Johnson Receiver of the Bank of Scandia against Art Cardwell, plus a partition suit by John Persinger and others of Republic against James Werts. Pearl Martin of the Kansas State College extension service led a leaders training school for women units of the Farm Bureau in Belleville amid cold.

County Republicans Endorse Landon at Belleville Meeting

Republican central committee members in Belleville passed a resolution endorsing Governor Landon for president. The gathering mourned Former Vice President Curtis and praised Senator Capper and Representative Carlson. Delegates and alternates to district and state conventions for Concordia and Wichita were named, with lists of District and State attendees and alternates.

Angle Announces For State Representative

J B Angle a well known stockman from Big Bend township announces this week his candidacy for state representative from the district. He serves on the state board of agriculture the free fair board the farm bureau board and is an official of the Republic county school board association. A Republic high school and Kansas State College graduate he is a World War veteran and with many friends in the district he expects a strong bid on a platform of real agricultural service.

Former Scandia Youth Dies of Pneumonia at 22

Clarence Smith son of Frank Smith of Los Angeles California died of pneumonia in Dodge City on Thursday at age 22. He is survived by three sisters Alga Los Angeles Helen Dodge City and Carl Topeka. He was buried in Dodge City. The Smith family formerly lived in Scandia.

Town Basketball Teams Lose Three More Games

Scandia's town squads were swept this week with losses. The girls fell 28 to 14 to Concordia on Wednesday. Friday saw local teams defeated by Norway on their home court by sizable margins.

Model T Ford Ice Boat Sails Down Republican River

Four Norway boys Morris Medlin Lyle Medlin Junior Dutton and Richard Dutton used a Model T Ford as an improvised ice boat on the Republican River from the Norway bridge to Concordia. They expected breaks in the ice but sped along, a feat possibly unique for the region.

School Dismissed and Power Crew Thaws Pipes

School was dismissed Tuesday afternoon as Kansas Power employees sent a heavy charge of electricity through the pipes to thaw them out. Sybil Johnson was a Sunday evening visitor at the J. R. Stofer home.

Sigsbee Murder Trial Opens in District Court

Jury selection completes as John Fredlund stands trial for the murder of Meritt Sigsbee Scandia drayman whose body was found in the Republican river last April. Co defendants Ed Carter Victor and Mrs Victor Anderson were previously held but released by habeas corpus. Trial before Judge Tom Kennett to continue over several days with witnesses from Scandia.

Basketball tournament begins this evening here

The public county basketball tournament opens tonight at seven o'clock in the local gymnasium. Fourteen teams from area schools will compete across 38 boys games 4 girls games and 3 consolation games with Scandia Community Club funding trophies. Cold Weather Keeps City Water Pipes Frozen and Thawed

Amid ongoing harsh winter, water mains and house lines freeze daily across the city. Officials rush to keep main lines open as three weeks of record lows grip the community and fuel shortages worsen. Neighbors share water while repairs and temporary piping restore a basic supply for homes and the local school.

Republic County Youths Find Jobs Under NYA Program

Five youths in Republic county have started work under the National Youth Administration. Henry Cleveland of Cuba and Ralph Green of Courtland work on filing cases for the county agent office. Frances and Lena Sankey of Republic handle clerical tasks, and Helen Louise Davis of Belleville compiles early county history for a future booklet. Appointments were made by re employment director James Harris of Cuba.

Carlson Bill Advances for Flood Control Study in Kansas Rivers

A bill by Rep. Frank Carlson to authorize a preliminary survey by the army engineers of the Smoky Hill and Republican rivers in Kansas seeks flood control measures.
