Governor Landon to Speak in Lincoln on national issues

Kansas Governor Landon, amid growing talk of a GOP presidential bid, will deliver a principal address on national issues at the Nebraska Republican Founders Day Celebration in Lincoln Nebraska. The February 29 speech will be broadcast nationwide on NBC and CBS networks at 9:00 PM.

Home Economics Girls Hold Cake Baking Contest

Second year home economics students at the high school held two cake contests using the same recipe. After school on Monday the cakes were judged by Mrs Reece Mrs Doctor and Miss Mary West. Helen Browns cake won first prize Georgine Johnsons second and Fern Johnsons third. Ribbons were awarded to the winners.

Methodist Church Announcements and Services

This Thursday afternoon the Ladies Aid will serve at the Gust Nystrom sale. The choir meets at the parsonage this evening. Clifton Henrickson Dies After Illness at Home Near Kackley

Clifton Henrickson, who had been ill with pneumonia for a few days, died Tuesday noon at his home near Kackley. He had recently been summoned for medical attention and was known in the Clifton area. The obituary notes his passing after a brief illness.

Acquitted John Fredlund in Sigsbee murder case

John Fredlund was freed last Thursday evening after Judge Kennett directed a verdict of acquittal in the Merritt Sigsbee murder trial. Prosecution indicated the case against Mrs Ed Carter, also implicated, may be revived.

After two months of icy blasts spring winds pushed old man winter out. Thursday began moderating and by the weekend the snow melted with temperatures near 65 degrees. Roads were rough where snowdrifts lingered and conditions remained poor in many areas.

The bulk of the crowd came from Scandia region and the Scandia Community Club covered most rent and donated the trophies. Referees included Principal H. D. Karns of Concordia High School with black hair and Mr. Bardin of Webber who was bald.

Large crowds attended the Republic county tournament with Narka boys and Norway girls capturing titles. Narka beat Courtland 19 17 for the boys crown while Norway swept girls rounds defeating Republic Cuba and Agenda with strong margins. Junior High Tourney Set for March 7 at Scandia

Scandia will host a junior high basketball tournament on Saturday March 7 in the school gym. John Heimerich heads the event with eight entered schools Scan dia Cuba Agenda Fairview Norway Republic Munden and Courtland. Trophies for first and second place are donated by the Community Club and city and a consolation prize is provided. A low admission charge will be charged.

Republic County town teams will play a three night basketball tournament sponsored by the Community Club. Scandia hosts games during the week of March 9 with teams from most county towns and at least eight clubs expected to enter.

Farm Changes Shift Labor Roles North of Scandia

Mr and Mrs Fred Walters move to the Ahrens farm south of town this week to work for Dr and Mrs Ahrens replacing Lawrence Barlleen who leaves for a lumber camp near Spokane Washington at the start of April.
