Bever Named Head of Kansas Income Tax Dept

Governor elect Walter A. Huxman named Ellis D. Bever to head the Kansas income tax department. Bever, a Republican, helped draft the state income tax law and previously served with the U S internal revenue service in Washington. Leslie E. Wallace of Larned became private secretary to Huxman with temporary offices in Topeka as speculation grows on future appointments.

Bids Sought For Belleville Post Office Building Materials

The U S Treasury procurement division plans a new Belleville post office and seeks local material firms within fifty miles for preferred status. Belleville postmaster Lloyd Johnson to supply firm names and a preliminary report on architectural basis to guide the building’s harmonization with surrounding structures. Moore and Lynch Buy Clover Farm Store in Concordia

Saturday deal transfers ownership of the Freeby Clover Farm Store to S. W. Moore and his son in law E. C. Lynch of Concordia. The new firm Moore and Lynch Grocery takes possession Monday, promising quality meats and groceries at reasonable prices. Mr Freeby has not announced future plans and locals hope the Freeby family remains nearby.

Ships Afloat play on narcotics to be staged at Scandia School

Misner Players present Ships Afloat at Scandia School auditorium at 8:00 on January 12. The drama, directed by Ernest Raymond Misner and written with Ethel Wolverton, portrays narcotic traffic with moments of comedy. Tickets go on sale December 22 at reduced prices for students and adults.

Wetzel Returns Home After Illness in Denver Hospital

Lyle Wetzel, who spent months working in Idaho and Colorado, returned home Sunday to stay with his parents Mr and Mrs O J Wetzel for the winter. Six weeks ago he was stricken with scarlet fever and moved to a Denver hospital for treatment.

Kansas Legislature Seeks New Revenue Sources

The 1937 Kansas legislature faces funding new state functions with an $18.01 million two year budget. It claims no 1936 property tax increases and notes no provisions for old age pensions unemployment insurance or school aid. The legislative council surveys potential taxes including sales, selective levies on tobacco soft drinks amusements cosmetics and a severance tax on minerals like petroleum and natural gas.

Water conservation meeting set for Concordia hear plans

A public meeting will be held Monday December 28 at 2 PM in the Whiteway Theater Concordia to discuss watershed plans for the Republican Smoky Hill Saline Blue and Kansas rivers in northern Kansas. The plan proposes three to five directors per river district and a civic club committee from the district will attend. Northwest Scandia Wolf Hunt Planned For Monday Morning

A coordinated wolf hunt is planned northwest of Scandia for Monday morning December 28 at 10 30. The route forms four lines along the Republican river US 36 and surrounding roads with captains directing activities and a blue rock shoot led by Olas Free. The event, sponsored by the local Methodist Church Brotherhood, invites all hunters but bans dogs and rifles.

Grade School Presents Magic Christmas Bell Operetta

The annual grade school operetta directed by Miss Cornelia Furry was staged Tuesday December 22. The play features Ted Cady as Santa Claus and includes acts with Wimble and Nimble, Norma Jean Richards and Ada Isaacson as maids, Swedish and Scotch dancers, Spanish girls with balloons, and various regional groups aiding Santa.Mrs. Larry Porter accompanied the songs and Mr. Miller led carols with an orchestra.

Contractor Wins Low Bid for Belleville Pool Project

G L Wheelock of Clay Center submitted the low bid of just over 56000 for the new swimming pool and recreation center in Belleville at the official letting in the city office Tuesday morning. Officials indicated the contract decision had not yet been announced, and work is to proceed quickly so the facility is ready for use next summer.
