Methodist Church Notes and Announcements

This afternoon the W F M S meets at Mrs Emma Isaacson home and serves a covered dish luncheon at 2 o clock. Sunday school is 10, morning worship at 11, evening service and League at 7 led by Gerhard Nelson and Irvin Street. Christmas program by Methodist Sunday School children

A Christmas program featuring songs recitations and two playlets was presented by the Methodist Sunday School children. Rev and Mrs Selin directed and received much credit for the success. After the program the children were given boxes of candy.

Carlson Returns to Washington Urges Stronger Neutrality Law

Congressman Frank Carlson, a World War veteran, heads to Congress on January 5 urging immediate rewriting of neutrality legislation to avoid entanglement in European turmoil. He says relief funding should aid needy farmers due to drought and crop failures until cash crops recover, while farm, social security, and water conservation receive focus.

New Year Tag Sale Sees Large Uptake in Vehicles

About 4,000 auto and truck tags issued last year. since December 1 sales are strong. Over 1,000 automobile owners bought 19387 tags and more than 85 truck owners equipped their vehicles with the yellow and black tags. Many more are expected to buy before January 31 when purchase without penalty ends. Delinquent motorists incur an extra fifty cents per month.

City to Cut Rates and Issue Holiday Light Bills

Belleville city commissioners order the city clerk to issue receipted light and power bills as a holiday gift for the past month. The city also plans lower power and commercial rates in the coming year, funded by a $22,000 tax free appropriation from the municipal water and light plant earnings.

Belleville Club to Host Free Picture Show Tribute

The Belleville Chamber of Commerce will present a free screening of The Plainsman in Belleville on Tuesday afternoon December 5. Residents of Republic County for sixty years may attend with registration at the Belleville Building and Loan office. The film honors the era of settlement and features Calamity Jane Wild Bill Hickok and other western figures.

Scandia F. and M. Store Rearranges Stock In Redesign

The Scandia F. and M. Store has a new appearance this week with a rearranged stock. A partition near the side entrance creates a 45 foot storage room in the north end and 65 feet in the front for the grocery and dry goods departments. Dry goods occupy the east side and groceries the west, reducing daily steps for Mr. Freed and Mr. Richards.

185000 in soil conservation funds in Republic county

The 1936 Conservation program has already delivered 83129.65 to Republic county with more to come. Local needs cover taxes and obligations as stated, and total funds are expected to reach about 185000. Local expenses take about ten percent, with five percent or less to arrive in the future. Larger checks are anticipated for multiple-owned tracts due to bigger acreages.

Gerald Reece of Kansas City visited Thursday evening to spend Christmas with his parents Mr and Mrs H W Reece and brother C C Reece and family. He and Jack Reece went to Kansas City Saturday with Melvin Hillery. They returned today.

Christmas Eve guests included Mr Peice Emil Isaacson and Junior who left Thursday for Kansas City to spend the holiday with Mr and Mrs H G Perrin and Mary Dell. Others visiting were Mr and Mrs Allan Staver and David and Miss Alice Isaacson of St Joseph and Ralph Clark of Tecumseh Nebraska. Mr and Mrs Isaacson and Junior returned home Sunday evening.

Formoso Man 1s Killed In Colorado Crash

Joseph Andrews, 55, of Formoso, was killed in an automobile accident near Littleton, Colorado, on Thursday December 24. He was known in western Republic County and recently sold his Formoso farm to move to a dairy farm at Louisville. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Formosa on Sunday afternoon.

Delegates Fill First Northern District Water Meet

About 250 delegates attended the first northern district water conservation meeting at the White Way Theater in Concordia. Dr. W. R. Barnard opened the session with brief remarks. Committees of three were appointed by delegates from each watershed. Permanent officers named: W. E. Dannefer president, William Woods vice president, E. Gaston secretary treasurer.

County records show holiday filings and tax notices

The Register of Deeds notes unusual holiday entries while the county prepares its annual directory. The treasurer urges car owners to bring last year registration cards for 1937 auto tags. A January commodity distribution of thirty five pound bags goes to relief clients. Four weddings occurred during Christmas week including a double ceremony. County taxes from Soil Conservation funds total about 194000 with total 441446 due for 1936 and first-half payments due around June 21 followed by second-half in December.

Island changes time for two Rock Island trains

The Rock Island Lines announce time changes for two trains on the local line effective January 3, 1937. Train 5 will depart Scandia at 6 28 p m and Train 6 at 9 28 a m. Local freight must be in Scandia Post Office by 8 45 a m for the morning train and by 5 45 p m for the evening train.
