Defective Stove Leg Almost Sparks House Fire

Neighbors rushed to the Emma Poage home in Hackley Tuesday morning to battle flames from a stove leg that shifted out of place. Burning coals spilled onto the rug, burning a section and filling the interior with smoke. quick neighbor action likely saved the home from total loss.

Mother of Mrs. Andrew Perry Dies in Mankato

Mrs. Robert Murray mother of Mrs. Andrew Perry of Scandia died suddenly in bed in Mankato Saturday morning. She was found by her husband and grandson, death caused by a heart attack during the night. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in Mankato.

The Methodist Episcopal Church led by Minister Joseph Englund offers a Christmas Day service at 5 30 a m with special music. The sermon titled The Prince of Peace will be delivered by the pastor. Doll Show Draws Crowds in Scandia with 200 Dolls Entered

A Scandia doll show last Saturday drew a large crowd of parents and children. Over two hundred dolls competed across eight prize groups with winners named, and Santa distributed fruit nuts and candy at 4 pm.

Young farmer breaks leg timbering near Scandia

Dale Sanderson a youth from Union township broke his right leg below the knee last Friday while helping neighbors Alfred Konovalsky and Arthur Coldazier pile saw logs on the Goodwin farm five miles northeast of Scandia. He was dragging logs with his team when a log rolled over trapping his leg between the log and a tree. He will be laid up for some time.

CCC Camp Call in January Eligibility Rules Emphasized

CCC enrollment details outline age 17 to 23, unmarried status, unemployment or need for work, six to twelve months service, U.S. citizenship, not in school or on vacation, good health and character. Enrollees must direct pay to a dependent or their account, and CCC is non military with no military instruction or service.

Cuba and Narka Defeat Scandia in Twin Games

Cuba and Narka swept Scandia in the season opener at Scandia on December 17 with scores of 41 15 for the boys and 22 9 for the girls The next Monday December 20 on Cuba’s court Scandia again fell 50 18 in the boys game and 35 12 in the girls game The visitors noted the foreign court hindered play and joked about ice skates.

Under student council direction the high school presents a Christmas program this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Senior junior sophomore and freshman classes along with pep club glee clubs G R and Hi Y perform letters to Santa readings musical numbers and gifts will be distributed to students and faculty at the close.

State Welfare Alotments Reach New High in November

A state report shows Public Social Welfare Alotments and grants totaling $520,103.17 for November, described as a new high. Republic county received $2,? from federal and state sources and $1,691.60 from the county with counties paying slightly more than half the total.

Tigers Defeat Swedes At Courtland In Narrow Victory

Courtland Tigers beat Scandia Swedes 31 to 20 on their court. Jean Larson led scorers with 11 points as Swedes showcased good passing but could not overcome the Tigers.

In observance of the Christmas season the Scandian schools will close today and remain closed until January 3 when students will resume work.

Babe Engwall of Courtland sustained a badly fractured leg when a car he was cranking moved and pressed him against a garage wall. The leg was placed in a cast and he will use crutches to get around.

New Licenses Required to Sell 3.2 Percent Beer
