Postmaster W. S. English warns patrons to mail as many packages cards and parcels as possible this week or next to ensure delivery before Christmas Day. Scandia Post Office stays open until 7 p m to handle late mail with special delivery advised for late cards.

United Brethren Church Seeks Christmas Program and Bazaar

United Brethren Church pastors Rev. Bertha Fogelberg and Rev. L. M. Keyes announce services in Norway and Scandia with Sunday School at 10 and preaching at 11. Christian Endeavor at 7 and a 7:30 service. On Saturday December 18 the Ladies Aid Bazaar partners with the doll show, with cats served in the afternoon. A Christmas program by the Sunday School is planned for Sunday December 26 at 10.

Christmas Music Program at Methodist Church Draws Crowds

The Methodist Episcopal Church announces a full Christmas season schedule. Morning worship at 11 includes an anthem and a talk on The Indispensable Christ. At 7:30 the choir performs The Christmas Story with multiple soloists, a ladies trio, and organ pieces directed by Mrs. J E Englund. Christmas Day features a matin service at 5 30 a m and a Sunday School program rehearsal on Saturday.

Dog Show Here Is Well Received In Scandia Parade

Fifty one dogs entered in the event under the guidance of local youth, with a crowd watching as seven of 58 registered dogs were released for misbehavior. Dogs from four to 140 pounds paraded the business district while seven winners received 1.50 prizes for categories including largest, smallest, homeliest and best behaved.

Honor Roll Increases Fourteen At Local High School

The six weeks list shows fourteen students on the honor roll and five on honorable mention. Seniors and juniors tie with four honor roll picks each, while freshmen and sophomores have three each. Examinations were held Nov 23–24, with cards distributed Dec 1.

Mrs Frank Carlson Taken By Death

Beaver township resident Mrs Frank Carlson died Tuesday morning at St Joseph hospital after a heart attack following an operation She was 62 and sat up in a chair awaiting return home Mrs Carlson is survived by her husband three daughters Mrs Peter Hansen Formoso Mrs Gottfred Johnson Concordia Mrs Anne Johnson Rackley and one son Forrest Neodesha Funeral services were held from the home and Ada Lutheran church last Friday afternoon.

Lottery drawing schemes halted by Kansas Attorney General

State Attorney General Will G. Beck ordered the end of cash drawing plans in Belleville and Concordia and to halt trade schemes in all Kansas towns. Guy Ward and Lee Stanford were directed to investigate other local schemes. Tickets cost 50 cents and drawings were weekly. merchants had distributed pads in November. Local officials later advised merchants that the plan did not violate state lottery law.

Ice Links Lead to Multiple Auto Wrecks on Icy Roads

The icy roads over four days caused many to leave cars idle while others struggled to navigate. On U S Highway 36 a Packard from Topeka sideswiped Charles Freed’s Chevrolet near the Ed Kallman farm west of Rydal, flipping Freed’s car. Freed had a leg bruise. the Packard driver was uninjured. Four miles south of Scandia a collision involving Jesse Figgins’s car left occupants with minor bruises and little damage. Patrols spread gravel on curves and hills to reduce accidents.

North Central Kansas Free Fair elects officers for 1938

The North Central Kansas Free Fair annual meeting at the courthouse elected two directors from each of 20 townships and chose new officers for 1938. The treasurer reported the entertainment division had a good balance after 1937 expenses, with all departments financially solid. Officers named: Frank Shoemaker, president. J.B. Angle, vice president. G. H. Bramwell, treasurer. Homer Alkire, secretary.

Birds Scatter Grain Aimed At Birds In Snow

A note reports Postmaster General Farley authorized rural carriers to scatter grain for birds when ground is snow covered. The piece reflects on farm policy, wage hour bill tactics, and a special session slated to adjourn December 22 with amendments expected in January.

Second Fiddle drew 300 at junior class play

A crowd of about 300 attended the junior class play Second Fiddle last Friday in the school auditorium. Miss Marianne Ozment directed the production and Miss Cornelia Furry supervised special effects. The farce impressed with a clever plot and a talented junior cast.

Santa Arrives Saturday for Scandia Doll Show

Scandia stores host a Saturday doll show with Santa Claus arriving at 4 pm to distribute treats. Dolls from local shops will be on display at the Ladies Aid Building after exhibition in stores, with a voting contest offering cash prizes for shoppers and the best dolls in eight categories.

Honor Roll Named for Grade School Pupils

After the third month of the current semester twenty nine students earned honor rating. Eighth grade honorees include Donna Christie Ada Isaacson and Paul Albro. Seventh grade winners are Lawrence Nelson and Norma Richards. Sixth grade recipients are Ronald Clark. Fifth grade honorees are Charles Hohman and Paul Nelson. Fourth grade honorees include Donna Jean Cooper Riley Goodwin and Donald Richards. Third grade honorees are Betty Dunn Helen Larson and Barbara Larson. Second grade honorees are Charles Cooper Jack Summers Billie Moe and Glenna Hokman. First grade honorees are Barbara Hammer Marylin Cooper Donald Lowell and Raymond Cardwell.
