Corn loans of 50 cents per bushel are now available to eligible 1937 Conservation Program participants. Applications may be filed at the County Agent's Office in Belleville until April 1, 1938. Loans bear 4 percent interest and mature in 10 months, with no loan later than November 1, 1938.
Postmaster English provides details due to miscommunication on postage rates. Closed letters for patrons at the city office are two cents per ounce for rural route items, and cards in open envelopes with only a name and address cost one and a half cents. Any additional writing or messages render the letter first class. Sealed letters remain first class.
The state highway department painted a white dividing line on Highway 36 last week to warn motorists of a dangerous road section. The safety line is applied on principal highways statewide as part of the highway safety campaign to keep drivers on their side.

The community observes a Week of Prayer with union services led by city and visiting ministers. The schedule includes United Brethren Church Sunday 7 p.m Young Peoples meeting and 7:30 prayer service, Tuesday at the same church, Wednesday and Thursday at the Presbyterian, and Friday and Sunday at the Methodist Church. Business leaders are asked to close during the set hours.
Employees of D G Hansen Construction Company unearthed three dynamite charges with fuses and electric caps while excavating the overflow bridge west of Scandia. Each charge held four sticks and was placed near pier holes and an abutment, posing a dangerous risk during crane and hand digging activities.
The Little Friendly Circle at Amana Lutheran announces New Year events led by Pastor Linnerson. A social hour and lunch start after ten, service at 11:15, and confirmation class sessions planned for mid January. The annual congregational meeting is set for January 4, 1938 at 1 30 p m.

Funeral services for Frank E Johnson were held Wednesday afternoon from the Ada Lutheran Church with Rev C G Danielson and Rev M C Linnerson officiating. Burial was in Ada Lutheran cemetery. Johnson, a farmer near Rackley, died early Monday after a brief illness at age 52.
Mr and Mrs Fred Jackson announce the engagement of their daughter Bernice to Hugh C McMullen of Courtland. The notice lists families and consent from both sides. The couple plans to wed in the near future.

Dale Sanderson, who broke a leg while aiding others, was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Concordia yesterday morning. He had recently suffered lumbago that developed into pneumonia.
The Epworth League hosts a Christmas party for members and friends next Friday December 31 with lunch at 10 p m and a watch night service at 11 p m featuring talks and music. Sunday School at 10 a m and morning worship at 11 a m include a New Year message by Rev Englund on The Unknown Road. No evening service due to United Brethren church joint service at 7 30 p m. Ladies Aid recesses January 6 serving replaced by a donation.
Mr and Mrs Charles Nondorf Mrs John Poage and Mrs Frank Peterson attended the funeral of Mrs Blanche Wertze past president of the Rebecca state assembly held Wednesday at Smith Center. Wertze was organizer and mother of Blanche Grace 679 Scandia Lodge.
Mr and Mrs Lester Burns and Sandra Sue of Hutchinson were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs I G Ny strom and Lois Jean. Mr and Mrs Carl Wennerstein and Ernest Wennerstein of Lincoln Nebraska were guests of Mrs John Yar son Saturday and Sunday. Miss Fern Johnson returned Thursday from Kansas City after undergoing an operation at Providence hospital there.
Miss Jeanne Plotner of Topeka and Mr. and Mrs. G P Plotner of Belleville were Christmas Day dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. J W Plotner.
Miss Ada Jeandebeur of Lincoln Nebraska visited Friday night with her parents Mr and Mrs George Jeandebeur from Friday night until Monday.
