The Swedes beat the Republic Wildcats 28 to 16 at the Wildcat gym. Scandia second team lost to Republic seconds 18 to 3. Scandia grades defeated Republic grades 25 to 9.
A traveling couple visits New York and the wife returns to a hotel floor with identical doors. She whispers to the room she thinks is theirs and repeats as there is no reply. The anecdote continues with a playful misdirection about hotel life and lost in translation.
The feature film Dust Be My Destiny plays this Saturday and Sunday at the Princess Theatre. Starring John Garfield and Priscilla Lane, it tells of a forgotten boy and girl who fall deeply in love and face a stark choice.
The Scania Community Club invites all community children to a free afternoon picture show at the Princess Theatre at 2 P M Saturday. Nancy Drew Trouble shooter will be shown. Santa Claus will attend with treats for every child. 400 treats planned. Window decorations and registrations for the 16 special windows end Saturday at 5 P M. Public notices mention participating sponsors and growing attendance. Walter and Lester Mowry visited the English family in Lucerne then toured Washington.
Students at S. H. S. prepare Friday afternoon Christmas program featuring two numbers per class and a Santa gift exchange. Dismissal follows as the holiday vacation begins.
University of Kansas sends delegates to Scandia on Thursday December 21 around 9 am for an educational program including two reels of film and a talk on college advantages. School dismissed to attend Belleville courthouse dedication. band participated. Swedes vs Jamestown basketball set for December 21 at Sweed camp with expected competitive contest.
On December 18 Maxine Perry led a G R meeting with Norma Bowersox arranging a Ready For Service program. Ruth Peterson read scripture and led prayer. Members, led by Norma, recited the G R Code then sang I Would Be True. A special number by Lorna Virginia Mahan Maxine and Marceline Perry followed a Pauline Skidmore topic talk. The gathering closed with a G R benediction and Christmas carols.
Christmas vacation for Scandia students and teachers begins Friday December 22. There is no school on New Year's Day. The school resume on Tuesday January 2.
Mr. and Mrs. Hodges plan a Christmas vacation in Wichita visiting Mrs. Hodges parents Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Smith and Mr. Hodges parents also in Wichita. They return Thursday December 28. Mr. Lemon spends Christmas vacation in Scandia with his basketball team. Mise Nichol to spend Christmas confined on Page 8.
Scandia Post Office will stay open until about 8 p.m. for the holiday season to serve patrons. Postmaster English says this is an annual custom and expresses gladness to provide the service.
The War Department shifts flood management from levy systems to upstream dams in the Kaw watershed. Studies favor a reservoir at the Republican Basin mouth, near Junction City, with a 1938 act funding initial work and a Kanapolis project under way after delays from a Fort Peck slide.
The City of Scandia closed a deal to buy the Preble building adjacent to the W C Preble Implement Store. Work will start soon to remodel for a city office, council room, fire apparatus storage, and a large rear workshop. A new roof will be added and the project should finish by early next year. City Clerk Lem Cooper will have an office there.
A large crowd attended the dedication of Republic County’s new court house despite cold weather. Governor and officials spoke as Rev P O Davis led the invocation and Gev Payne Ratner delivered the dedication address praising the project and construction team. Continued remarks noted the governor planned handshakes with attendees.
Emil Erickson reports a successful Monday sale and satisfaction with prices. After 22 years in the community, he has purchased a farm near Duluth Minnesota and left today for the move. The town notes their departure with best wishes for good luck and better conditions.
