The annual grade school operetta When Christmas Comes by Olg M. Carrington debuts December 19. Directed by Miss Luella Buthman with a cast including Ronald Clark Joyce Nichols John Englund Norma Jean Greenslade Evelyn Stromberg and others tells of an old couple awaiting a Christmas homecoming as children arrive to brighten their day.
Ernest W Burns a prominent local farmer and Past Master of the Masonic lodge died at home after a four month illness. He resided in the area for 55 years and served as lodge treasurer. Funeral services were held at the Hampton Danielson Funeral Home and Amana Lutheran Church with burial at Fairview Cemetery in Yuma. The Scandia Masonic Lodge conducted the grave service.
Will Rogers spins a light tale about a paying guest at a church who tries to cheer him. The clergyman insists he will never beat him, while Rogers jokes that even at the finish the clergyman will be burying him, underscoring playful fatalism.
Fire at the Penney Store in Belleville nearly demolished the building early last Thursday. Loss figures were not yet known as investigation continued.
A junior class troupe staged Grandma Goes Hollywood a three act comedy last Friday to a large audience. Irene Gritten played Grandma with charming support from Donald Freed Betty Irene Larson George Phillpitts and Phyllis Phillpitts.
Governor Ratner warns of severe water shortages across Kansas and outlines emergency measures. He announces a December 15 public meeting at 10 a.m. in Topeka’s Representative Hall to discuss a comprehensive long range water program with state authorities and local communities.
Last Tuesday around 2:00 a m a barn behind John Fredlund and wife burned to the ground destroying Mr Fredlund's winter wood and Shivvers family goods. Fire origin unknown with no wiring or prior access to the premises. In a separate note the county treasurer reports nearly 500 1940 license tags issued since sale began December 1.
The 26 members of Scandia High School Vocational Agriculture organized a Future Farmers of America chapter. Officers include Ed Larson as president and coach, Alva Thompson vice president, Maurice Freed secretary, Pete Sandell treasurer, and Frank Larson reporter. Members were initiated by Belleville Chapter on December 13. The meeting featured the play She Made Me Think of Grandma, Santa Claus, a social hour, and a light lunch.
At the G. R. Cabinet meeting held at Viola Peters home on Tuesday December 5 the group decided to spread Christmas cheer. Plans include sending cards to boys and girls at the Winfield Home for the Feeble minded presenting potted plants to local shut ins and hosting an evening of caroling.
The Hi Y met on Wednesday December 6 with Ted Cady reporting on his Fort Collins Colorado convention visit. He found the meetings very enjoyable and beneficial and the group hopes to send a delegate again next year.
Evelyn Nylund led a program on The Ideal Girl with Alice Goodwin offering the prelude and Jean Johnson reading Proverbs based devotionals. Pauline Skidmore and Helen Forsberg gave talks, Phyllis Marshall read a poem, and Evelyn closed with Our Other Friends and Follow The Gleam.
The Y W club held a December 7 gathering with 80 members in the high school auditorium. Mrs K V Cox led responsive devotionals and Mrs Jay C Everett read a Lantern in Her Hand Christmas story about a humble Nebraska prairiel home.
The report lists students by grade level earning honor roll honors or honorable mention. Eighth grade includes John Englund with honorable mentions Chester Ewing Norman English Charles Hohman and Richard Rockey. Seventh lists Joyce Nichols Ronald Clark and Paul Nelson. Sixth shares David Englund Riley Goodwin and Iona Hammer with Donna Jean Cooper as honorable mention. Fifth includes Barbara Larson Betty Dunn with Ardith English honorable mention. Fourth names Charles Cooper Glenn Hohman Billy Moe Kenneth Nichols Jackie Summer with Patsy Cooper honorably mentioned. Third lists Marylin Cooper and Barbara Hammer. Second includes Jacqueline Cooper Carlyne Flesher with honorable mentions George Stromberg and Carolyn Loring. First shows John ny Loring with honorable mention.
The community mourns Olaf B Strom age 81 who died at his Republic home. Funeral services were held at United Brethren church in Republic and he was buried in Prairie Rose cemetery.
Veteran aviator Martin Jensen flew a new streamlined cantilever low wing monoplane he designed. The craft achieved 110 mph cruising speed and around 40 mph landing speed with a 60 horsepower motor, about 25 mph faster than peers. Jensen, brother of Dan Hans and George Jensen of Norway, has visited the area previously.
The dedication ceremony for the New Republic County Courthouse is scheduled for next Monday. Ma?e closing remarks will be delivered during the event.
Scandia launches a festive season with decorated storefronts and a calendar of events. Window judging runs December 16 and new displays appear Thursday through Saturday at listed stores. A Kid Show at Princess Theatre on December 23 offers free admission for children under 16 with Santa in attendance. The Courthouse dedication is December 18 with notable guests and open house all afternoon. County offices move into the new building for tours.
Streets in Scandia are slated for an all weather crushed rock surface. Workmen began grading two streets last week in a city WPA cooperative project. A foreman’s name is awaited approval and completion is hoped before cold weather sets in.
Grade school room mothers and Red Cross workers plan a toy repair session at Mrs. Jack Smiths home on Friday. All are invited to help or donate toys for distribution to needy children at Christmas.
Miss Mary West visited Mia Will Currie Tuesday afternoon in a brief social call.

Santa Claus’ aides should obtain their Social Security account numbers before taking temporary Christmas jobs in shops stores and other occupations covered by the Social Security Act says Max M. Griffin Salina manager of the Board. Application blanks may be procured at any post office.
