The 1940 New Year greeting urges readers to balance moral and business accounts, write off failures, and foster kindness and determination. It calls for self improvement, friendship, fairness, and hope as bells mark the old year’s end and the new year’s beginning.
Dr E Eric Larson of Los Angeles helped arrange the Surgeons Convention program held last week at the Ambassador Hotel. Attendees included Dr Charles W Mayo of Minnesota. Larson, son of Mrs Anna Larson, spent his youth in Scandia and is now noted as a prominent physician in the city.
The last week’s distribution included 2870 pounds apples 2253 pounds graham flour 1087 pounds rolled oats 1299 pounds onions 1369 pounds pears and 2261 pounds wheat flour. It reached 371 cases and 951 people.
One hundred and eight 1940 gas tax exempt applications had been issued by the county clerk up to Saturday December 23rd. More are expected during the current week. Mrs. R C Helvey Tracey Rader and Robert of Oklahoma City and Mable Calver of Elwood Nebraska spent Christmas with Mr and Mrs Foster Helvey and family.

The 1989 Christmas campaign by Scandig Community Club closed Saturday night amid ice and sleet. About 200 to 250 children attended a free Princess Theatre show featuring Bonita Granville in Nancy Drew Troubleshooter, followed by Santa giving candy and peanuts. George Stromberg C E Albro and Walter Berger supervised the event and treats. Window decorations reportedly boosted community registration versus last year.
The community mourns the death of Ruthetta Chilcott, wife of Ray Chilcott, who died at her home aged 47 years three months. Funeral services were held at the house and the Methodist church on Tuesday December 26 with Rev. J. E. Englund presiding. Interment followed at Riverview Cemetery.
In harmony with the Week of Prayer, churches in Scandia will hold union services starting Sunday evening January 7 at 7 30 p m Ministers from Scandia and Courtland will cooperate in delivering the messages All residents of Scandia and nearby areas are urged to attend and pray.
Jamestown students staged a December 21 pep meeting in study hall to drum up support for the upcoming game. Anna Jensen portrayed Miss Gadabout on a radio segment while Lorna Mahan sung and the student body cheered. A separate KU assembly featured Reece and McComas sharing facts about the university’s programs, costs, housing, and opportunities for students from 37 states and 11 foreign countries.
Mrs Ollie Johnson Lucille and Mrs May Meade were in Belleville. O M Thorpe funeral held at High Inch Baptist with cemetery interment. Several residents hospitalised for appendicitis pneumonia and a finger injury from sledding. Christmas Day visits and dinners noted among local families.
The film version of On Your Toes features Zerina with a strong ballet cast and Eddie Albert Alan Hale and Frank McHugh in supporting roles. It plays at the Princess Saturday and Sunday, praised as uproariously funny with moments of beauty and notable Norwegian influences in Zerina’s appearance.
The regular Hi Y weekly meeting opened with group singing Christmas carols. Dr. Everett delivered a talk titled Higher Ideals, outlining five aims of life: labor laugh love lift and look up. The benediction closed the session.
A jumble of holiday greetings shows Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hohman and family traveling to Kansas City and Leavenworth visiting relatives. Many local families including Johnsons, Nystroms, Jensen, Nelson, and Betis hosted dinners and Christmas Day gatherings with extensive family attendance and meals in Courtland, Concordia, Jamestown, and surrounding areas.
A weekend storm covered Kansas with snow varying from six to fifteen inches in places including Garden City Beloit Mankato and the Colorado border. Sleet and rain mixed in creating dangerous highway conditions but moisture will help soil and wheat prospects for spring farmers. Local observers note the snowfall boosts moods among farmers and businessmen despite mixed wheat forecasts.
Seventeen women in Republic County work in the new WPA Sewing Room at the courthouse. Social Welfare Director Marvin Rosene reports current employment and notes the project provides jobs and practical aid through the Works Progress Administration.
Rollo R. Wells 57 secretary treasurer of Wells Brothers home builders was critically injured in a Sunday morning motor car collision in Kansas City Missouri. His wife Edith Wells and 12 year old daughter Barbara Jean were injured less severely. Many relatives and friends were listed as Christmas Day guests of various local families.
