The Sandpoint Planning and Zoning Commission plans to ask the City Council to call three public hearings on an initial comprehensive plan. The eight page plan, prepared by City Attorney Phil Robinson, complies with the 1975 Local Planning Act requiring a plan by January 1978.
Bonner County will close students Monday and Tuesday for teacher workshops and conferences. Monday covers regional education conferences with Sandpoint teachers in Coeur d Alene. Tuesday is Curriculum Day with workshops on metrics Holt reading and other topics for elementary and secondary teachers as well as special education methods. An all day first aid workshop will be held at City Hall. The rest of the year includes holidays and quarter/semester dates.
Muhammad Ali narrowly defeats challenger Earnie Shavers by unanimous decision to keep the heavyweight crown. Shavers labored with counter rights and stunned Ali in moments, but Ali survived and pressed in the 15th round before the final decision.
The $10.5 billion farm bill signed by President Carter aims to add about three million people to the food stamp program. In Bonner County, 100 plus households may gain as the cash stamp purchase rule ends, while 1.5 million nationwide may be weeded out by tighter eligibility. A Spokane regional hearing on regulations is set for Oct 18 at Lady of Lourds School.
The Food and Nutrition Service outlines pilot projects where recipients registered for work over 30 days and earning below their allotment must accept a government or CETA job offer. No wages are paid. the allotment becomes payment. Only stores with at least half staple food sales can accept stamps. Staples include meat, bread, dairy, produce, and more. The rules replace medical deductions with a $60 standard deduction and invite comments on vendor payments. Congress extended the program four years. farm support measures set 1977 wheat at 290 per bushel with a 225 loan rate, forecasting $12 billion in wheat payments.
Wickes Forest Industries plans a southern Idaho mill if enough timber from the Sawtooth National Forest and south hills lands can be secured. A 22 million board feet purchase did not justify a mill yet, but Wickes expects additional timber to emerge, possibly by 1978 or 1979. The bid war ended with Wickes paying 17.05 dollars per thousand board feet for the purchase.
Keith Latimer 62 of Deadwood South Dakota was found alive at Mineral Point after spending the night on the shore. He had been missing since a fishing trip in the Garfield Bay area when high waves swamped his 15 foot fiberglass boat.
John P. Parker of Cutbank Montana was found lying beside Highway 200 two miles west of Sandpoint and admitted to Bonner County General Hospital. He fled the hospital Thursday evening after being treated and then left Spokane bound hitchhiking.
Arthur and Robert Neimar of Coeur d'Alene traced a 33 year separation to find nine of ten siblings. After years of searching, a chain of clues from Cascade Montana to Great Falls led to a phone call that sparked a reunion with relatives scattered in Denver, Morton, and beyond.
Bonner County Humane Society presents a 2127 sign petition to county commissioners seeking 55000 for a county shelter for lost and unwanted animals. President Charles Fontaine says the group will ask Idaho senators Church and McClure for federal support. The society currently finds homes for animals via radio notices and notes land behind Pend Oreille Veterinary Clinic was donated for a shelter two years ago.
