Evans cautious on U S health insurance plan

Northwest forest fire season ends with relief in 1977

UPI reports Northwest foresters mark the 1977 fire season as a relief after drought feared a worst year. About 24,500 acres burned in Region 1 and 6, with state totals 5,000–6,000 acres per state, despite a high number of fires and notable lightning activity in Region 6.

Schools Get Music Grant In Idaho County

The Idaho Commission for the Arts and Humanities awarded a $2,000 grant to the Bonner County School District to expand the county string program. Superintendent Wayne Likens said Marion Royle requested funds to hire an aide to teach elementary strings at Sagle and Farming schools. The project uses a 50-50 match from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Idaho commission. Boundary County Community Theater also received $2,000 from the commission.

Deer strike injures car. Dodge sustains damage near Priest River

Donald D. Nelson, 29, of Priest River, driving a 1974 Dodge Sedan, struck a deer on Highway 57 near Priest River Friday evening. The deer was killed and the car sustained about $400 in damage.

Teen Driver Escapes Police Pursuit In 1970 Mustang Crash

Don R. Rasor 17 of Sandpoint wrecked a 1970 Ford Mustang on Lignite and Garfield Bay roads near Sagle. Police say he fled a chase at high speed with headlights off. The car left the road, skidded 92 feet after braking, rolled through a ditch, then slid 38 more feet on Garfield Bay Road causing substantial damage.

A 1977 Ford pickup driven by John J. Murtagh, 54, Blanchard, struck a cow Thursday morning on Highway 41 near Blanchard. Damage was estimated at $1,000 to the truck.
