Drawdown of Priest Lake Set to Begin October 8

Idaho Department of Water Resources announces annual Priest Lake draw down will start October 8 and last about one month lowering the lake roughly two feet. The water control structure is state owned and operated with fish spawning in mind. Boaters are advised to move vessels before the drawdown starts.

Gas Bill Opponents Launch Long Senate Filibuster

In a historic all night session two Democratic opponents of natural gas deregulation, Senators Metzenbaum of Ohio and Abourezk of South Dakota, held the Senate in session to block deregulation. Majority Leader Byrd tried to outlast them, aiming to force a vote as sleep-deprived members drifted between couches and the chamber. A key vote went 47 to 40 against Abourezk’s bid to kill a Pearson-Bentsen deregulation plan.

McClure Opposes Federal Regulation of Gas Prices

Idaho Senator Jim McClure spoke in the Senate against continuing federal regulation of natural gas prices. He argued regulation would worsen shortages and raise prices by reducing domestic production and increasing dependence on foreign imports. He noted Idaho relies on unregulated Canadian gas and cited Eastern shortages last winter as proof of mispricing.

Bonner County Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously rejected a 28 parcel Talache subdivision proposal citing road capacity, wildlife, and fire risk concerns from area residents. Commissioner Wilson stated no return to the commission and said the county could upgrade the Sagle to Talache road to handle added traffic.

Idaho Wheat Deficiency Payments to Reach 40.8 Million

Deficiency payments totaling 40.8 million dollars will go to Idaho wheat producers, with the total economic impact projected at 119 million. Dr Robert Sargent of the University of Idaho Extension notes each dollar in payment boosts total business income by about 2.90, and describes the drought hit 1977 harvest as disappointing for farmers and Main Street merchants. Payments require a current wheat allotment on file with ASCS and are calculated from the allotment acres times farm yield, with an estimated payment rate around 65 cents per bushel.

Auto Recovered After Thefts In Bonner County

A 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle stolen Monday from behind PJ's Tavern was recovered Tuesday by the Bonner County Sheriff's Office one-eighth mile up Blacktail Road. The owner is Terry L. Eller of Sandpoint.

Idaho Board Proposes Permanent Campus Alcohol Rule

The State Board of Education Board of Regents of the University of Idaho seeks to make permanent the emergency rule banning alcohol on public higher education campuses. The proposal covers possession and consumption on leased facilities and campus grounds including lounges unions recreation rooms and athletic facilities and cites the fall return as constituting an emergency.
