Driver and passengers escape as car stalls before oncoming locomotive
A Sandpoint man Roy Edward Oliver and two passengers Ruby Oliver and Kenneth Simmet fled their stalled car on Cedar Street railroad crossing as an oncoming locomotive approached. The car was pushed down the tracks into a parked railcar causing about 700 dollars in damage. Oliver claimed poor visibility due to a parked freight car. In separate incidents a school bus collided with a pickup causing 700 dollars damage to the pickup and 150 to the bus, and Gary Frank Stevens and Dell Sehanz escaped injury when Stevens’ pickup rolled on Dufort Road after leaving the curve and striking bark chips.

Thieves and vandals strike Sandpoint area over weekend
Hope resident Harold Kiebert reported a six horsepower outboard stolen from a locked boathouse on the Denton Slough after thieves broke the boathouse and motor locks. Greg Greene found a 12 foot aluminum boat and motor in the Pend Oreille River, with the craft reported stolen earlier and Greene planning retrieval. David Nesbitt said burglars took 310 dollars in hardware including a dial block and tackle and 400 feet of plastic pipe. Two Sandpoint area service stations reported windows broken by rocks late at night.

Arson Suspected in Sandpoint P and E Fire
Arson is officially suspected as the cause of a Sunday morning fire at the P and E Woodporking Shop in Sandpoint. Firefighters, led by Ken Lunde, arrived after reports at about 12 30 am. The blaze began in pallets beside the building and spread to the front before crews contained it in about two minutes. Investigation continues.
