Attorney General Ordered to Act by Wednesday Deadline

Symms Urges BIA Action For Kootenai Settlement

Rep Steve Symms urged BIA commissioner Morris Thompson to personally negotiate a settlement with the Kootenai Indian Tribe of Northern Idaho. He said tribal spokesmen should negotiate to expedite a fair settlement and noted concerns any disturbances could affect legislation transferring 12.5 acres of federal land into trust for the tribe.

Two Killed In Weekend Mishaps

Two people died in Bonner County weekend accidents. William W. Augustine III, 20, was killed when his panel truck hit an 89 car Burlington Northern train at Butlers Crossing near Hope after failing to stop. The truck was dragged several hundred feet as the train, 40 mph, settled on the vehicle. Robert C. Nelson, 16, died on State Highway 200 near Diamond International Mill when his motorcycle crashed. 12-year-old passenger Walter Mueller is in critical condition at Newport Hospital. Another injury occurred Friday when Vicky L. Cogeshall, 28, of Kootenai, flipped off Selkirk Rd after her husband’s vehicle left the road. Inattentive or negligent driving listed as cause.
