Andrus warns Idaho police to break Kootenai roadblocks
Gov Cecil Andrus warned the Kootenai Indian Nation that state police will arrest any tribe member who erects roadblocks to seize control of ancestral lands. Tribal leader Doug Wheaton said the group will not back down and could declare war on the United States unless a treaty is negotiated before midnight Thursday. Roadblocks were planned at Eastport Port Hill sites in Montana and near Sandpoint as tensions rise over more than 1.6 million acres claimed as tribal land.
