Confrontation risk looms as Kootenai threaten land seizure
In Bonners Ferry Idaho the 67 member Kootenai Tribe warns it may seize 1.638 million acres of claimed aboriginal lands if a treaty is not negotiated by midnight Thursday. Sheriff Ketner likens the stance to Wounded Knee while AIM representatives arrive amid fears of outside trouble. Tribal spokesman Wheaton notes demand for a 128000 acre reservation and new payments in exchange for land, water, mineral, hunting and fishing rights. Regional BIA talks are sought but not yet seen as enough to avert action.

Curtis McEwan named administrator at Bonner General Hospital
The Bonner General Hospital Board appoints Curtis McEwan of Sandpoint as hospital administrator following the death of James E. Breinich. McEwan, 62, has chaired the board for eight years and has served as acting administrator for three months. He previously led logging and timberlands at Pack River Co. and worked 15 years with the U S Forest Service.

Controlled burns in Rapid Lightning Creek area continue
Fire activity in the Rapid Lightning Creek area is from controlled burns and should decrease soon says Forest Service District Ranger Jerry Stearn. About half the year’s 1 600 acre broadcast burns are complete with eight burns either completed or nearing completion and a final strip planned in a large block. Separate fires on Little Blacktail Road near Sandpoint are under investigation by Bonner County and the state Department of Lands with four arson fires reported, all small and under control.
