Sandpoint police report an attempted assault Friday at a woman's home. A young bearded man demanded she stay quiet and threatened to shoot her if she screamed. He assaulted her briefly in the bedroom before fleeing. two suspects are being investigated.
A 29-year-old Sandpoint man, Albert Gunter, faces DUI, resisting arrest, and assault on a police officer charges after allegedly fighting officers who attempted to arrest him at a First Avenue party. Bond set at 300, 500, and 500 respectively. A separate incident involved 19-year-old Mathew Steinbuck of Clark Fork charged with resisting or obstructing an officer.
Panhandle Health District informal survey of four northern Idaho counties shows milk producers rated about 8 percent while federal standards require 90 percent for inter state shipment. Health officer Bob Camp notes minor construction and cleanup issues but says quality heavily influences valuations and no major problem exists.
The forecast calls for a warm Tuesday in Sandpoint with a high near 90 degrees. Tonight will be mild with a low around 45 degrees.
Dr. Roy Larson of Kellogg Idaho says about 25 horses have died from lead poisoning in areas near the Bunker Hill smelter, with cases extending up to 20 miles away. He notes dogs and cats are affected and that the smelter is the probable source of heavy metal fallout, prompting warnings to livestock pastures.
Public schools serving more than 50 000 students were canceled as Kanawha County and nearby Boone County districts closed indefinitely after a protest over textbooks. Superintendent Kenneth Underwood cited safety concerns and said the move follows last Friday's shooting of two men as state police reinforced Company B. The dispute centers on titles like Man and The Dynamics of Language and includes protests over sexual content.
Police Chief George Elliot of Sandpoint was suspended for administrative reasons by Mayor Les Brown. A special council session at 5 p m will review reports from two investigating officers in a closed executive session. The prosecuting attorney asked not to disclose details at this time.
Four Priest River youths were injured in a one vehicle crash three miles southwest of Priest River on the old Priest River road. Driver Leo Arthur Pass, 18, and passengers Tom Elgin, 19, Pamela Bitner, 17, and Harry White, 18, suffered injuries after the car went broadside 96 feet then slid 62 feet, hit a stump, flipped onto its top. A second Saturday crash in Kootenai involved Gerald D. Johnson, 22, and Rudolph Jacobson, 67 from Sandpoint with no injuries reported.
