Fire Destroys Kootenai Home and Outbuildings

A midday blaze of unknown origin destroyed the Wilbur Hammack residence in Kootenai along with the garage, carport and tool shed. Northside Fire Association found the fire out of control by arrival and fought it with two trucks and four volunteers plus neighbor assistance. No injuries were reported though the Hammacks lost nearly all belongings. the family includes three young children.

Grass Brush Fire Near Priest River Triggers Turmoil

A grass and brush fire between Priest River and Newport caused excitement Monday afternoon as Burlington Northern train activity and nearby homes faced threat. State Forest Service crews from Sand Point, railroad crews, Diamond National’s stud mill crew, and locals battled the blaze. High school students were called to help while a city fire truck arrived after the fire was largely controlled. Railroad crews remained at the scene overnight. most flames were out by 5 p.m.

Shock Death Near Homedale Idaho

Kenneth Robert Redtfeldt a 28 year old from Middleton died at Caldwell Hospital after receiving a 480 volt shock while repairing an electrical panel at Arvin Millwork Co southeast of Homedale Idaho He collapsed during the job and died shortly after at the hospital.

Fish kills blamed on river derailment and gasoline spill

Idaho Fish and Game reports mass fish deaths on the St Joe River and Pine Creek Swan Valley after a derailed tank car released caustic soda into the North Fork and main river. Gasoline spill in Pine Creek killed more than 3,000 fish.

Basil Gooby Dies at 70 in Sandpoint

Basil E. Gooby lifelong Sandpoint resident dies Monday September 14 at home aged 70. Born February 20 1900 he founded Gooby and Sons Meats Inc in 1958 and belonged to Idaho State Meat Packers Association. Survived by wife Dorothy three sons Robert Patrick Richard daughter Marylin Madsen two brothers and a sister ten grandchildren. Memorials may go to Sandpoint Lions Club. Funeral Friday September 18 at 2 00 p.m. Moon Chapel with Rev. James E Doak officiating Cremation to follow.

Sportsmen's Group Sets September Meeting in Priest Lake

The Priest Lake Sportsmen's Association will host the Dist. 1 Idaho Wildlife Federation quarterly meeting at 1 30 p m on September 27 at Lamb Creek near Nordman. Congressman James McClure will speak and committees will report. The event includes a dinner and door prizes for conservationists and their spouses.

North Idaho Concert Association announces three season lineup

The North Idaho Community Concert Association starts its third season September 21 with a week long membership drive ending September 26. The season features Richard Cross and Doris Yarick on October 19 at the Panida Theater Sandpoint, followed by the Pacific Brass Quintet on February 16 and the Tuscan Arizona Boys Chorus on April 27. Co-op To Hold Saal Annual Stockholders Meeting

The Stockholders of the Co-op Roe & Supply Co Inc will meet in Sandpoint Community Hall on Thursday September 24 at 8 PM President John Macks said. Participants will vote on amending the Articles to raise authorized capital to one million dollars and to change fiscal year dates. They will also consider amending the By-laws to adjust the annual meeting date and fiscal year ending.
