Idaho Education Association urges the state to fund 75 percent of public school costs. The group backs a revolutionary plan to share wealth with counties lacking forest, railroad, or public utility resources and calls for state equalization of supplemental levy revenue.
The Chamber aims for a $15,000 to $18,000 operating budget, up from prior $12,000 to $14,000, to support its community efforts. A membership and finance drive is set for Sept 17 with a 7:30 a.m. breakfast at the Elks Lodge, while Sept 10 votes at the Pastime Cafe will decide by law changes and the reorganization plan.
Idaho health director Dr. James Bax reports initial tests show lead poisoning in nearly all of about 175 children tested in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District. Results from 925 more children await CDC data as tests expand to adults and high school students.
A 20-year-old Union Pacific brakeman, Kelly P. Cunningham of Spokane, was killed near Sandpoint after being run over by a freight car he had just weighed. Officials say he fell from the car while riding the scales, suffering severe injuries. no other workers witnessed the accident.
Advance ticket sales for the first annual Panhandle Rodeo in Sandpoint are excellent with both Saturday and Sunday shows expected to draw large Northwest crowds. Over $1,000 in prize money lures top cowboys. events include bareback bronc bull riding steer wrestling saddle bronc calf roping and more. Tickets cost 2.75 for a single show or 5 for both. at the gate 3.50 for adults and 1 for children under 12.
James Breinich administrator of Bonner General Hospital and longtime Sandpoint resident died around noon after a serious illness. He is survived by his wife Evelyn two daughters Barbara Weatherby Spokane and Marilyn Crandell Ishmire Turkey and a brother Charles Breinich California.
