The Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce records 6542 tourists visiting the chamber office in summer with 2699 stopping in August. Director Barbara Remmers notes strong June and July counts and a drop this week to 35 to 40 daily. She says area motels likely fared well while campgrounds lagged.
Idaho Democratic Party Chairman Howard Humphrey called on Republicans to disclose campaign finance figures, noting Gov. Cecil D. Andrus has public records and urging GOP candidates to follow suit. He cited GOP opposition to the Sunshine Initiative and referenced ongoing scrutiny of George V. Hansen’s federal disclosures.
Ballots have been mailed to all Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce members for four board seats. Ballots must be returned by Sept. 10 and counted by a five member election board not named on the ballot. Nominees include Fred Darnell Frank Chapin Earl Midkiff Dan Nelson Gary Pietsch Doug Rude Al Willis and Jack Young. Voters may cast only four votes and invalid ballots will be disqualified.
Congressman Steve Symms and Governor Cecil Andrus schedule separate election tours next week. Symms speaks at Outdoors Unlimited meeting Monday 7:30 p.m. in Sandpoint. Andrus walks Sandpoint and Priest River streets to hear locals Tuesday with a 3 to 5 p.m. stop at Washington Water Power and 7 to 7:169 p.m. reception at Kootenai School. Andrus seeks reelection against Lt. Gov. Jack Murphy.
An early morning fire north of here destroyed a barn and 20 tons of hay at the Wilbur L. Marsh. Sheriff Robert Wilcox said Bonner County deputies and the Northside Fire Department responded to the blaze located one mile off U.S. 95 and a mile north of Selle Road. The cause is not yet determined, but smoldering material underground from previous burning at the residence is suspected.
The Idaho Board of Education approved new and expanded university programs on a Wednesday budget meeting. It authorized 160 388 for additional University of Idaho faculty across accounting architecture anthropology education journalism psychology and summer school. It also approved 33 000 to replace federal work study funds at Boise State and approved 235 000 for acting president Dr Robert Conrad pending sabbatical.
Twin Falls Police and volunteers prepare for the Snake River gorge jump by Eve Knievel with Top Rank financing. Officials require permits insurance and safety measures including 65 police, two fire trucks, a helicopter ambulance, 50 water faucets and 200 portable toilets as crowd estimates reach 50 000. Knievel could earn 6 million if the launch proceeds Sunday September 8.
