Fire Prevent It Week Successful in Sandpoint Schools
Assistant Fire Chief Darius Williams reports that about 750 first to third graders in Sandpoint area schools participated in Fire Prevent It Week. The program, funded by Sandpoint Realty Company, taught reporting fires and family evacuation planning with a film and Q A session.

Hofmeister Trial Begins in First-Degree Murder Case
Special prosecutor Tom Frost outlines evidence he will introduce in the first degree murder trial of Everett Hofmeister Jr. He contends June Darlene Hofmeister had no reason to be at the law office the night she died and that she was found in a car that drifted at about 11 mph. Autopsy showed strangulation after a head blow, and Frost says Hofmeister had an affair in 1973 74 and 75. The victim was last known alive at 11 40 p m July 15 after a call with a marriage encounter group. The case was moved to Nez Perce County for a fair trial. Jury selection spanned three days with alternates chosen. Probable witnesses include Rocky Eveland Allan Ceriale Edwin Stuart David Pemberton and others.

Three Injured In Mishaps In Bonner County Over Weekend
A string of weekend crashes in Bonner County left three hurt. A Spokane man, Jeffery Gellner, suffered multiple fractures after a head on collision with Carl Worthen of Coolin on East Shore Road near Indian Creek State Park. Gellner’s condition was listed as improving after moving from intensive care. Worthen faced a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. A school bus incident in Cocolalla involved Sharryn Pratt. 45 children on board reported no injuries, but Betty Funk was taken to Bonner General Hospital in satisfactory condition. Funk’s daughter Rebecca was also injured. A separate two car crash on Dufort Road near Highway 95 left two people seriously injured and a third with minor injuries.
